ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Jan. 24, 2015) - The LIU Post men's basketball team shot an impressive 53.8 percent from the floor and 56.3 percent from long distance in Saturday's 82-69 win over Roberts Wesleyan in East Coast Conference action at the Voller Athletic Center.
Senior forward
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) recorded his fourth double-double in six contests, amassing 16 points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard
Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) tied Williams with a 16-point showing. He also had five boards, three assists and two steals. Fellow junior guard
Akosa Maduegbunam (Hyde Park, Mass.) poured in 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
Leading 14-12 nearly midway through the first half, the Pioneers (9-9, 4-6 ECC) went on an 11-1 run in a three-minute span to widen their advantage to double digits (25-13) at the 8:18 mark. Maduegbunam knocked down three consecutive triples to cap off the streak. Senior forward
Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) sparked it with a lay-up.
The Redhawks (7-9, 3-7 ECC) answered in a big way though. Roberts Wesleyan closed out the half on a 25-6 run to bring a 38-31 cushion into the locker room.
During the second half, Roberts went ahead by as many as 11 points (56-45) at the 12:53 mark, but LIU Post wasn't done yet. The Pioneers responded with a 17-2 spurt in a five-minute stretch to re-claim the lead (62-60). Burns started the comeback effort with a fast-break lay-up, and closed it out with back-to-back three-pointers.
Shortly thereafter, the Redhawks would even the score again, before the green and gold pulled away. Tied at 62-all, a 17-4 run by the visitors, capped by an
Isiah Stokley (Queens, N.Y.) trifecta, sealed the victory for LIU Post.
Head Coach
Erik Smiles and the Pioneers are back in action Thursday (Jan. 29), when they kick off a crucial four-game homestand at the Pratt Recreation Center against UDC. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
