BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2015) - On Saturday, senior forward
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) put up a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, as the LIU Post men's basketball team won a 68-62 overtime thriller against East Coast Conference rival St. Thomas Aquinas at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Trailing by a basket (62-60) in the final two minutes of the overtime period, a pair of
Akosa Maduegbunam (Hyde Park, Mass.) free throws sparked a string of eight consecutive made shots from the line to put the game away for the Pioneers (6-7, 1-4 ECC). The green and gold were a perfect 10-of-10 from the stripe in the additional five-minute stanza.
Prior to overtime, LIU Post and STAC (7-8, 4-2 ECC) were locked in a tight battle that featured 10 tied scores and two lead changes. Tied at 42-all more than midway into the second half, the hosts reeled off a quick 7-0 run in 1:37 that put them up 49-42 with 7:20 to go. Sophomore forward
Greg Dotson (Abington, Pa.) netted a lay-up to get things going. Junior guard
Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) drilled a three from the wing to cap it off.
However, in the last two-plus minutes of regulation, the Spartans would tie the game. Senior guard Jonathan McNair (Washington, D.C.) and sophomore guard Chaz Watler (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each knocked down a triple in a span of 2:03 to pull the score even at 55-all with 1:06 remaining. Watler later had the opportunity to give his team the victory, but both of his free-throw attempts in the closing seconds missed the mark.
In addition to Williams' stellar performance, senior guard
Isiah Stokley (Queens, N.Y.) finished with nine points and five rebounds. Maduegbunam chipped in nine points in 28 minutes off the bench. Burns compiled eight points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Three players,
Chris Orozco (Tenafly, N.J.),
Jared Hall (South Orange, N.J.) and Dotson had six points apiece. Dotson and Hall also pulled down five and four rebounds, respectively.
Head Coach
Erik Smiles and the Pioneers are back in action Wednesday (Jan. 14), when they host Molloy in an East Coast Conference showdown at the Pratt Recreation Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
