Men's Basketball Cruises to 91-52 Win Against UDC

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2014) - On Thursday night, the LIU Post men's basketball team held as much as a 24-point first-half lead, and eventually breezed to a 91-52 triumph versus East Coast Conference foe UDC at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y.
Holding a slight 8-5 edge nearly four minutes into the game, the Pioneers (14-8, 9-5 ECC) went on a 14-4 run in a five-minute stretch to extend their advantage to 22-9 at the 11:05 mark. Senior forward
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) accounted for six of the first eight points. Junior forward
Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) capped it with a three-point play.
More than four minutes later, LIU Post, leading 32-19, rattled off an 11-0 spurt over a stint of 2:01 to make it a 43-19 contest with 4:45 left. Sophomore guard
Akosa Maduegbunam (Hyde Park, N.Y.) netted a trey to spark it, while Allen wrapped up the streak with a lay-up on the fast break. He also chipped in a two-handed dunk over the stretch.
The hosts would eventually carry a comfortable 46-28 cushion into the break. Allen paced the green and gold offensively in the opening stanza, scoring 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor, and a 4-of-4 effort from the stripe.
In the latter session, LIU Post sealed the victory early on. Ahead 52-36 just over three minutes into the half, the Pioneers closed things out with a 14-0 burst, which widened the margin to 66-36. Junior forward
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) and junior guard
P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) combined for all the scoring in the run. Williams poured in 10 points. Torres added the other four.
Torres made 10-of-17 shots from field-goal range for a game-high 22-point showing. He collected six rebounds, three assists and three steals as well. Williams finished with 21 points and nine boards. Junior guard
Isiah Stokley (Queens, N.Y.) amassed 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Allen added 11 points, eight boards, four steals and two assists. McCann checked in nine rebounds and seven points in 19 minutes off the bench. Maduegbunam racked up seven points, four boards and a steal.
LIU Post, which shot 47.8 percent (33-of-69) for the game, dominated in the paint (60-16), capitalized off turnovers (32-8), made good on second-chance opportunities (24-3), and found the basket on the fast break (30-8).

Erik Smiles and the Pioneers return to action Wednesday (Feb. 12), when they begin a three-game road trip in Bridgeport, Conn. at ECC rival Bridgeport. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
