Men's Basketball Holds On For 64-57 Victory Against STAC

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2014) - Down 25-24 at the break, the LIU Post men's basketball team went on a 17-7 run to start the second half, and never looked back in a 64-57 besting of St. Thomas Aquinas Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y.
During that stretch, the Pioneers (16-10, 11-7 ECC) rolled off an 8-0 spurt in a stint of 2:20 to grab a 32-25 lead with 17:36 left. Junior forward
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) opened it with a 1-of-2 trip to the line, and ended it with a three-point play. Senior forward
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and junior guard
P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) added a lay-up apiece.
The hosts would eventually go up by as many as nine points (41-32) at the 12:11 mark, via a three-ball from the corner by freshman guard
Jared Hall (South Orange, N.J.).
St. Thomas Aquinas (12-12, 8-10 ECC) chipped away at the deficit, however, and closed the gap to a one-possession game (60-57) in the waning seconds of regulation. LIU Post hung on though with clutch free-throw shooting, as the green and gold went 10-of-12 from the stripe in the final 2:42.
During a back-and-forth opening session, neither squad went ahead by more than five points. The period featured three tied scores and two lead changes.
Allen put together a double-double in the victory, totaling a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds. Williams posted a 16-point, six-rebound, three-assist, three-steal effort. Hall amassed 11 points and three boards. Torres and junior guard
Isiah Stokley (Queens, N.Y.) poured in six points apiece. Stokley also pulled down four rebounds, while Torres grabbed three boards and dished two assists.
