Women's Basketball Falls to No. 7 Stonehill, 64-59
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 31, 2014) - In its final game of 2014, the LIU Post women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 64-59 decision to seventh-ranked Stonehill at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville.
The Pioneers (5-5) held a three-point lead with just over four minutes to go in the second half, but turnovers doomed LIU Post as Stonehill (8-1) closed the game on a 10-3 run to come away with the victory.
In the first half, LIU Post crashed the offensive glass to stay in the game, despite shooting 28.1 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes. Senior guard
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) led the way for the green and gold, scoring nine first-half points. The Pioneers hauled in 22 total rebounds and collected six steals, but trailed 30-28 heading into the break.
In the second half, the Pioneers continued to battle down low. With just over 13 minutes of play left, Williams hit a jumper to spark a 9-0 run that spanned over two minutes. The spurt gave the Pioneers their first lead (46-45) since it was 3-0 early in the contest. A
Quanisha Ratley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) steal and fast-break lay-up soon gave the green and gold a 48-46 advantage.
After Stonehill stopped the run with a lay-up from Ashley Gendron, junior center
Nyasia Davis (Rahway, N.J.), Ratley and senior guard
Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each hit a jumper to extend the LIU Post lead to seven (54-47).
But, the Skyhawks would take over from there, outscoring LIU Post, 14-5, over the final 7:43 of regulation. The Pioneers turned the ball over six times during that stretch.
Williams finished with a game-high 23 points. Davis brought down a game-high 11 boards and junior forward
Kalinka DeRoche (New Haven, Conn.) chipped in nine boards and three blocks.
Next up for the Pioneers is a trip to Waltham, Mass., where they take on defending national champion Bentley on Monday (Jan. 5). The non-conference tilt is slated for a 7 p.m. opening tip.
