GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Dec. 31, 2014) - In its second New Year's meeting with Adelphi in as many seasons, the LIU Post men's basketball team knocked off the Panthers, 65-54, in non-conference action at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
Sophomore guard
Jared Hall (South Orange, N.J.) led the Pioneers (5-6) with 13 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench. Senior forward
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) and junior guard
Akosa Maduegbunam (Hyde Park, Mass.) added nine points apiece. Maduegbunam also grabbed eight boards. Senior forward
Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.), who pulled down eight rebounds, and senior guard
P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) each scored eight points.
Down 19-12 with just over eight minutes left in the first half, LIU Post rolled off a 16-0 run in a span of 4:49 to go in front 28-19 at the 3:18 mark. Maduegbunam knocked down two of his three-pointers in the burst. Williams closed it out with a jumper, off a feed from Hall.
The green and gold, who shot at a 40.7 percent (11-of-27) clip from the field in the opening session, brought a 30-23 cushion into halftime.
Adelphi (4-7) opened the second half on a 12-3 streak to go back in front by a trey (35-32), but LIU Post responded with an 18-7 run to grab an eight-point advantage (50-42) with 7:20 left in regulation. Hall provided six points, including back-to-back lay-ups, in that stretch. Junior guard
Chris Orozco (Tenafly, N.J.) chipped in five points.
The Pioneers eventually built as much as a 10-point lead in the final minute-and-a-half, via a dunk on the fast break by sophomore forward
Greg Dotson (Abington, Pa.), to put the game away.
Head Coach
Erik Smiles and his LIU Post squad are back in action next Wednesday (Jan. 7), when they travel to Dobbs Ferry for a 7:30 p.m. opening tip at East Coast Conference foe Mercy.
