MANSFIELD, Mass. (Nov. 19, 2014) - On Wednesday morning, LIU Post red-shirt senior quarterback
Steven Laurino (Boise, Idaho) was dubbed the Northeast-10 Conference Most Valuable Player, in balloting conducted by the league's 10 head coaches.
Laurino, a five-time NE-10 Offensive Player of the Week selection in 2014, received Most Valuable Player recognition for the second time in his career at LIU Post. He was named the PSAC East and ECAC Rookie of the Year in 2011. The Boise native presently leads all of Division II in points responsible for (282.0) and points responsible for per game (25.6), while also ranking in the Top-10 in total offense (355.2), completions per game (26.18) and rushing touchdowns (18).
Laurino has had his best campaign yet in a Pioneer uniform, completing 61.0 percent (288-for-472) of his passes for 3,305 yards and 28 touchdowns. Additionally, he holds numerous LIU Post career records, including passing yards, total offense, touchdown passes and pass completions.
Laurino was joined on the All-NE-10 first-team by red-shirt senior offensive lineman
Chris Rossi (Hillsborough, N.J.), junior tight end
Sean Binckes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and red-shirt sophomore wide receiver
Shane Hubbard (St. Albans, N.Y.).
Binckes has made 51 catches for 625 yards and five touchdowns, whereas Hubbard has had a breakout year with 966 yards receiving and eight TD's, both of which rank in the Top-5 statistically in the NE-10. Back on Oct. 11, the red-shirt sophomore hauled in a game-winning two-yard touchdown pass in a 28-25 win over Stonehill.
The green and gold's All-NE-10 second-team offensive selections were composed of junior offensive lineman
Mike Sollenne (Massapequa, N.Y.) and red-shirt sophomore running back
Mike Williams (Westbury, N.Y.).
In nine starts at the tailback spot, Williams has been the team's second-leading rusher (532 yards), boasting a 4.7 yard-per-carry average and two touchdowns. Yet, Sollenne, along with Rossi, have opened the holes up front, as LIU Post led the Northeast-10 in rushing yards (1,767) this season.
Defensively, red-shirt senior
Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) and senior
David Sumter (Hollis, N.Y.) landed spots on the All-NE-10 first- and second-team rosters, respectively.
Coming off a season-ending injury in 2013, Brunetti converted to linebacker from running back. He went on to place second in the conference in tackles (111) and tackles per game (10.1), and fourth in interceptions (4).
Sumter, who was also named the Northeast-10 Defensive Lineman of the Year, has collected the second-most sacks in the league with 9.5. He has registered 35 tackles (12.5 TFL) on the season, as well.
Fellow defensive players
Richard Wright (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Jess Agbotse (Hackensack, N.J.) earned nods to the NE-10 All-Rookie Team. In the defensive backfield, Wright has stepped onto the field in all 11 games, amassing 37 tackles, four pass break-ups, two interceptions and a blocked kick. On the defensive line, Agbotse sports 23 tackles, two quarterback hurries and 1.5 sacks.
Lastly,
Bryan Collins (Sayville, N.Y.) was tabbed as the NE-10 Co-Coach of the Year. He shared the honor with Saint Anselm's Patrick Murphy. Collins mentored the Pioneers to their first outright conference title and NCAA bid since 2005. In 17 seasons at the helm of the program, Collins has compiled a record of 123-63, translating to a .661 winning percentage.
The LIU Post football team is next in action on Saturday (Nov. 22), when they face Virginia State in an NCAA Tournament opening-round match-up in Petersburg, Va. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
