BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2014) - Trailing 25-21 with less than a minute to go in the game, red-shirt senior quarterback Steven Laurino (Boise, Idaho) hit red-shirt sophomore wide receiver Shane Hubbard (St. Albans, N.Y.) on a two-yard touchdown pass, sealing the LIU Post football team's 28-25 come-from-behind win against Stonehill in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.

The game-winning possession took nine plays and 2:27 of clock time. Laurino completed all four of his pass attempts in that series, culminating in the jump ball to Hubbard with 22 seconds left. He also took four keepers for 15 yards. Red-shirt sophomore running back Mike Williams (Westbury, N.Y.) picked up eight yards on a screen pass to set the Pioneers (4-2, 4-1 NE-10) up inside the 10-yard line.

LIU Post trailed for the entire first half, but scored a key touchdown before the break. Down 10-0 late in the second quarter, freshman defensive lineman Kevin Petit-Frere (Amityville, N.Y.) got a strip sack of Stonehill (2-4, 2-3 NE-10) sophomore signal-caller Tom Sydeski (Brockport, N.Y.). The Pioneers' Dan Belfiore (Glen Cove, N.Y.) subsequently jumped on the loose ball at the Skyhawk 20 for the recovery.

Five plays after the turnover, Laurino connected with junior tight end Sean Binckes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) on a three-yard touchdown pass, which cut the deficit to 10-7. Binckes had a stellar day, making 11 catches for a team-leading 103 yards.

In the second half, Stonehill quickly widened its lead, but not by much. On their first drive of the third quarter, the Skyhawks moved the ball down inside the Pioneer 10-yard line. Following three unsuccessful tries to get seven points, junior kicker Steve Grzywacz (Manchester, N.H.) split the uprights from 25 yards out to make it a 13-7 game.

The green and gold answered back furiously though, registering 14 unanswered points to grab their first lead of the contest (21-13). The first of LIU Post's two TD's came via a Laurino 20-yard hook-up to Hubbard on the hosts' opening series of the half. Two Pioneer drives later, Laurino staged an impressive 17-play, 85-yard offensive attack that led to his two-yard rush into the end zone.

Stonehill wouldn't go down quietly, however, as it picked up touchdowns on its ensuing two possessions to go back in front, 25-21. A six-yard run by Deontae Ramey-Doe (Dorchester, Mass.) put the Skykawks on top with 2:50 remaining in regulation.

Laurino then pieced together his fourth game-winning drive of the season, and the LIU Post defense won it from there. With 16 seconds to go and Stonehill on its own 41, Sydesky dropped back, and had the ball jarred loose by senior defensive lineman David Sumter (Hollis, N.Y.). Belfiore recovered his second fumble of the afternoon to end the game.

Laurino finished his day 24-of-41 passing for 216 yards and three touchdowns. He added a game-best 91 yards rushing to his effort as well. Williams carried the ball 15 times for 56 yards. In addition to his two touchdown receptions, Hubbard hauled in four catches for 42 yards.

Defensively, red-shirt senior linebacker Anthony Brunetti (Bayville, N.Y.) collected a team-high 12 tackles. Red-shirt junior linebacker Brandon Cheney (Hewlett, N.Y.) made 10 tackles. Belfiore and senior defensive back Roger Hamilton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added six tackles apiece. Junior defensive back Jhaleel Oswald (Rosedale, N.Y.) and red-shirt sophomore defensive back Justin Ortiz (Staten Island, N.Y.) (three TFL) both had five tackles.

Head Coach Bryan Collins and the Pioneers return to action next Saturday (Oct. 18), when they host Saint Anselm at Bethpage Stadium on Homecoming, and for a Northeast-10 Conference battle of second-place teams. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
