BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2013) - The No. 5 LIU Post field hockey team, behind a seven-point effort from sophomore Keliann Margiotta (Sewell, N.J.), downed Dowling, 10-1, Thursday afternoon in its home opener at Hickox Field in Brookville, N.Y.
With the win, the Pioneers improved to 4-0, while the Golden Lions dropped to 0-3.
The Pioneers took a 5-0 advantage in the first half, thanks in part to two Lyn-Marie Wilson (Bridgetown, Barbados) goals, and a tally apiece from Margiotta, senior Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.), and sophomore Catlynn Kundrat (Rocky Point, N.Y.). Margiotta assisted on two goals, while graduate Dani Crouse (Westville, South Africa) and Wilson also chipped in with helpers.
The second half was much of the same, as the green and gold tacked on another five goals, this time coming off the stick of five different Pioneers. Dragon scored the first goal, her second of the game, off a pass from Crouse, and freshman Melissa Quintanilla (Rome, N.Y) followed eight minutes later with her second goal of the season. After that, senior Stephanie Ruhle (Wanaque, N.J.) put away an unassisted tally for the Pioneers (8-0). Lastly, Crouse found the back of the net off a cross from Dragon; and then assisted Margiotta on the Pioneers final goal of the game, bringing the score to 10-0.
With 1:07 remaining to play, Dowling's Sarah Shams-Kollar (Poway, Calif.) scored off a penalty corner taken by Elizabeth Athing (Atlantique, N.Y.) to break up the LIU Post shutout.
For the contest, the Pioneers out-shot the Golden Lions by an overwhelming 49-1 margin. They also held a 16-3 clip in penalty corners.
