Women's Swimming In First After First Day Of Metropolitan Championships
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 15, 2012) – The LIU Post women's swimming team has finished its first day at the Metropolitan Conference Championship, grabbing first place in each event it entered. The Pioneers currently lead the pack with a score of 446 points.
The College of New Jersey trails with 301 points, and the University of Bridgeport is in third place with 264.5 points.
The Pioneer 200-yard freestyle relay squad of
Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada),
Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom),
Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.), and
Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) faired very well, setting a meet and a school record with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:34.89. The other Pioneer relay squad of
Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden),
Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada),
Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.), and Brazier teamed up to set a new conference, meet, and school record with a 'B' cut time of 3:45.90 in the 400-yard medley relay
As for the individual events, three Pioneers competed in the 500-yard freestyle. Garriock grabbed first place with a 'B' cut time of 4:57.42.
Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) finished the event in third with a 'B' cut time of 5:06.73.
Angelica Norrena (Solna, Sweden) finished with a time of 5:21.55, good for 13th place. Another three individuals took part in the 200-yard individual medley with all three finishing in the top-five. Kwok took the first spot with a 'B' cut time of 2:05.32,
Sandra Luiga (Jarfalla, Sweden) finished close behind with a third best and 'B' cut time of 2:06.07, and
Chelcee Hew (Savage, Minn.) rounded out the top-five with a time of 2:12.01.
A total of seven Pioneers participated in the 50-yard freestyle. Soerensen took the cake, setting a new school record and personal best with a 'B' cut time of 23.87. Brazier, Delehanty, and Pettersson finished in 2nd, 3rd, and 5th all with 'B' cut and personal best times. Brazier finished with a time of 23.94, Delehanty was right behind with a time of 24.09, and Pettersson slapped the wall at 24.16. Jones,
Mairi Morrison (Carnock, Scotland), and
Katherine Kazaba (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) finished in 8th, 9th, and 18th with times of 24.50, 24.39, and 25.13, respectively.
The meet continues throughout the day Saturday, with the preliminaries in the morning followed by the finals in the evening.
