Three Pool Records And A Team Record Established In Women's Swimming 122-111 Victory Over Sacred Heart

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 1, 2013) – Three pool records and a new team record were established on Senior Night for the LIU Post swimming team as it grabbed first place finishes in 12 of 14 events en route to a 122-111 victory over Sacred Heart University Friday night in the Pratt Recreation Center Natatorium.
In her final home meet, senior Sandra Luiga (Jarfalla, Sweden) finished with the most individual first place finishes out of all swimmers on the night. She grabbed her first win in the 200-yard freestyle, just narrowly edging out teammate Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) with times of 1:59.32 and 1:59.53, respectively. Luiga also slapped the wall ahead of the pack in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:30.03. In her final individual event, she finished five seconds ahead of the competition, with a time of 2:15.06 in the 200-yard individual medley.
Freshman Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) finished the 100-yard freestyle in record fashion with an NCAA "B" cut time of 51.40. This time not only gave her first place in the event, but she established the new team record and the new pool record for the event. Senior Mairi Morrison (Carnock, Scotland) grabbed the second place finish in the event, touching the wall after 54.80 seconds. Brazier also finished the 100-yard backstroke with an event-best time of 58.50. Teammate Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom) touched the wall a second behind her, finishing with a time of 59.58.
Along with Brazier, freshman Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.) also finished with two individual event wins. Kwok finished the 200-yard butterfly 14+ seconds ahead of her opponent, finishing with a time a 'B' cut time of 2:04.68. Kwok once again blew her competition out of the water, finishing the 200-yard backstroke eight seconds ahead of the second place finisher with a time of 2:07.46.
The Pioneers finished with three other individual event wins. The first came from freshman Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) who barely slapped the wall ahead of teammate Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.) in the 50-yard freestyle, with the pair grabbing times of 24.82 and 24.99, respectively. Junior Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada) edged out Soerensen in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 58.43 while Soerensen slapped the wall with a time of 59.16. The final first place finish came in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Angelica Norrena (Solna, Sweden) snatched the first place finish with a time of 5:18.63, ahead of teammate Kirsty Elliott (Edinburgh, Scotland) who finished with a time of 5:21.69.
The Pioneers also finished in first and second place in the two relay events of the night. Kicking off the meet with the 400-yard medley relay, the Pioneer squad compiled of Jones, Garriock, Kwok, and Brazier opened the meet with a bang, finishing the event with a 'B' cut time of 3:56.00, which also was a new pool record. Kazaba, Luiga, Soerensen, and Morrison made up the second place finishing team, registering a time of 4:17.74 in the event. The final event of the meet was the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Garriock, Delehanty, Brazier, and Morrison took first place and shattered the previous pool record with a time of 3:35.56. Finishing in second place in the event was the Pioneer team of Jones, Norrena, Kat Kazaba (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.), and Maxi Russo (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) who finished with a time of 3:42.33.
The Pioneers close out their regular season tomorrow at the East Stroudsburg University Invitational. The meet is scheduled to kick off at 12 p.m.
