BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2013) - Senior forward Carlee Dragon (Bridgewater, N.J.) and graduate midfielder Dani Crouse (Westville, South Africa) accounted for 12 total points, as the fourth-ranked LIU Post field hockey team overwhelmed Northeast-10 rival American International, 8-1, Tuesday afternoon at Hickox Field in Brookville, N.Y.
With the win, the Pioneers remain unbeaten on the season with a 17-0 record, including a 9-0 mark in conference play. The Yellow Jackets fell to 7-10 overall and 2-7 in NE-10 action.
Sophomore defender Heidi Schaffner (West Long Branch, N.J.) kickstarted the Pioneer scoring with her first goal of the season in the seventh minute, off an assist from Crouse. Dragon added her 27th goal of the season just over two-and-a-half minutes later, after receiving a pass from junior forward Stephanie Ruhle (Wanaque, N.J.). She dribbled past the defender to the left flank, and found the back of the net.
The Pioneers made it 3-0 with just under 10 minutes to play in the half, when Crouse sent a quick pass to junior forward Lyn-Marie Wilson (Bridgetown, Barbados), who drilled the ball into the cage. Crouse added an unassisted tally in the final minutes of the half, when she corralled her own rebound, and put it back.
The second half was much of the same as the Pioneers scored another four goals. Dragon teamed up with Crouse for her second goal of the day, before Ainslee Penfield of AIC got her squad on the board with an unassisted tally in the 39th minute.
Dragon then fed junior forward Stephanie Ruhle (Wanaque, N.J.) for the Pioneers' sixth goal of the contest. With that assist, Dragon set new school records for assists in a season (15) and a career (30). Freshman forward Melissa Quintanilla (Rome, N.Y.) added a goal off a feed from Dragon in the 55th minute, and sophomore midfielder Catlynn Kundrat (Rocky Point, N.Y.) tapped in the final goal of the game off a feed from Wilson with less than nine minutes to play.
Freshman Meredith Stocklin (Mount Laurel, N.J.) picked up her 10th win of the season after playing the first half between the pipes, making three saves. On the other side, Kori Huffman turned aside 11 shots for AIC.
On the afternoon, the Pioneers outshot the Yellow Jackets, 23-7, and held a 12-7 advantage in penalty corners.
