Box Score
WATERBURY, Conn. (Oct. 23, 2013) - On Wednesday, the top-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2013 campaign, dropping a 1-0 decision to No. 15 Post at LaMoy Field in Waterbury, Conn. It was an 87th-minute tally by senior forward Joe Baccielo (Stratford, Conn.) that clinched it for the Eagles.
Baccielo dribbled past two defenders, and ripped the ball into the lower right corner of the net with 3:51 left in regulation. Post owned a 16-14 edge in shots in the contest.
The Eagles had the first three chances of the match, but the Pioneers (14-1) answered with back-to-back shots on goal by senior back Eirik Bjoernoe (Randaberg, Norway) and sophomore midfielder Per Forgaard (Stavanger, Norway). However, both attempts were turned aside by senior keeper Andre Lindsay (Clarendon, Jamaica), and the two squads went into halftime in a 0-0 stalemate.
During the latter half, LIU Post and Post (12-1-1) again had their opportunities to score, but it was the hosts that came on late for the game-winner. Baccielo netted the deciding marker off an unassisted effort.
Between the pipes, Lindsay had eight stops for the Eagles, which held a 4-2 clip in corner kicks. Senior goalie Marco Jorgensen (Copenhagen, Denmark) made four saves for the Pioneers.
Since he did not score, junior forward Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) ended a streak of 21 consecutive games with a goal. That now ranks second all-time in NCAA Division II.
Head Coach Andreas Lindberg and his LIU Post team are back at it Saturday (Oct. 26), when they host Mercy in their 2013 home finale in Brookville, N.Y. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
