Volleyball Hands NYIT First Loss With 3-0 Sweep

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2013) - The LIU Post volleyball team traveled next door to take on neighboring East Coast Conference rival NYIT Tuesday evening, and came away with a 3-0 sweep over the previously-unbeaten Bears in Old Westbury, N.Y.

With the win, the Pioneers improved to 11-3, including a 3-0 mark in ECC action. NYIT picks up its first loss of the season, falling to 12-1, and 2-1 in league play.

The first set started out with the two squads battling point for point, with the fifth tie of the game coming at 15-all.After that point, LIU Post closed out the set on a 10-5 run, capped off by a Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) kill to take the first set by a score of 25-20.

The Bears led 5-3 to open the second set, but after scoring the next four points to take a 7-5 lead, the Pioneers never relinquished their lead in the set, as they went on to win, 25-22, with junior Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio) knocking down the last kill off a feed from junior Lulu Centro (Rome, Italy) to secure the win.

In the third and final set, the last time the home squad had a share of the lead was while the score was at 6-6. LIU Post retained the lead for the remainder of the game until Namahoe once again closed out the set, and the match, for the green and gold with the final kill of the game off an assist from Centro to bring the score to 25-21 to complete the sweep.

Freshman Shelby McCool (Eugene, Ore.) was the lone Pioneer to tally double-digit kills, as she finished with season-highs in kills with 17 and attack percentage at .438.  Centro tossed up 35 helpers, and sophomore Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii) scooped up a game-high 16 digs.

For NYIT, Shelby Cable finished with 11 kills.

Next up for the Pioneers is a home match-up against ECC foe Mercy on Thursday (Oct. 3) with play to begin at 7 p.m.
