BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 15, 2013) – The LIU Post women's swimming team grabbed first place in 13 of 14 events with freshman
Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.) registering three individual first place finishes along with taking part in the first place finish by the 200-yard medley relay team, as the Pioneers swam to an 128-119 victory over East Stroudsburg University Tuesday evening in the Pratt Recreation Center Natatorium.
Kwok placed first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:11.92, the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.03, and the 200-yard butterfly with a NCAA “B” cut time of 2:06.79 which was nearly 13 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Kwok swam along with freshman
Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom), junior
Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada), and freshman
Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) to grab first place with a 'B' cut and Top Five Pioneer time of 1:45.82 in the 200-yard medley relay. In their individual events, Jones took a second place finish behind Kwok in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.48.
Garriock grabbed two individual first place finishes, first in the 500-yard freestyle in which she beat teammate
Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) with a 'B' cut time of 5:09.04, and Hedberg tapped the wall in second place at 5:25.02. Garriock's other first place finish was in the 100-yard breaststroke in which she edged out East Stroudsburg's Sami Vavra with a time of 1:07.22 to Vavra's 1:09.15. Hedberg took a first place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle in which she touched the wall after 11:01.69, 12 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.) slipped past teammate
Mairi Morrison (Carnock, Scotland) in the 50-yard freestyle. The pair took first and second place with times of 25.09 and 25.39, respectively. With less than a second to spare, Delehanty slapped the wall ahead of East Stroudsburg's Karli Vavra in the 100-yard freestyle to finish first with a time of 55.14.
Also finishing the night with two individual first place finishes was
Chelcee Hew (Savage, Minn.). She edged out teammate
Sandra Luiga (Jarfalla, Sweden) for the top spot in both the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Hew finished with a time of 2:28.00 while Luiga finished with a time of 2:34.62. In the 200-yard individual medley, Hew and Luiga finished with times of 2:16.58 and 2:17.60, respectively.
The two final first place finishes for the Pioneers came from sophomore
Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden) and freshman
Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway). Pettersson took first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.35, just ahead of second place finisher Brazier who slapped the wall with a time of 59.59. Soerensen edged out teammate
Angelica Norrena (Solna, Sweden) for the first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. The pair finished the event with times of 1:58.09 and 1:59.03, respectively.
Next on the calendar for LIU Post will be a 1 p.m. meet at Siena College on Saturday, Jan. 19.
