Women's Tennis Heco/Gaimaro Doubles Team Advances To Day 2 Of ITA East Regional

PHILADELPHIA, PA. (Sept. 23, 2012) – The LIU Post women's tennis team participated in the 2012 USTA/ITA Regional Championship this weekend, hosted by the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and Holy Family University. 

Four Pioneers competed in singles action. Senior Lejla Heco (Malmo, Sweden) received a first round bye, and advanced to face Bentley University's Rachael Litton.  Litton took the match 8-3.  Freshman Amanda Gaimaro (Lynbrook, N.Y.) also received a first round bye. She then advanced to face off against Vanessa Leon of Goldey-Beacom College, but dropped the match 8-2.  After advancing due to her first round bye, senior Erin Lawney (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) dropped the second round match 8-3 to Hayley Craskey of Chestnut Hill College.  Freshman Jovana Djurdjevic (New York, N.Y.) wrapped up Pioneer singles action with a second round 8-2 loss to Holy Family University's Steicy Castro after her first round bye.

Lawney and Djurdjevic teamed up in doubles play to face-off against Roberts Wesleyan College's Linhart/Linhart combination after the Pioneers received a first round bye.  Roberts Wesleyan took the match win 8-1. 

The highlight for the Pioneers came from the doubles team Heco/Gaimaro.  After yet another first round bye, Heico and Gaimaro were able to pull out an 8-6 victory over Georgian Court University's doubles team Leal/Dennis.  This win allowed Heico/Gaimaro to advance into third round play and to day two of the tournament.  Sunday morning, the duo dropped their doubles match-up to Dowling College's Goncalves/Romanoff doubles team 8-0.

The Pioneers return to action Friday, Sept. 28 at Dowling College.
