No. 3 Men's Soccer Handles Roberts Wesleyan, 3-2
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 23, 2012) – For the second straight game, junior forward
Cemil Turan (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals to lead the third-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory, holding off comeback attempt by the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks on Sunday afternoon.
The Pioneers improve to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the East Coast Conference, while Roberts Wesleyan slips to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Redhawks stunned the Pioneers in the opening ten minutes of play by taking a 1-0 lead on what would prove to be their only shot of the half, but it was certainly one they made count as Stephen Stewart sent a RWC free kick from left midfield towards the goal, where it found the head of Brent Ownes and went into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
But the Pioneers battled and tied the game just a few minutes later in the 15th minute as
Eirik Bjoernoe (Randaberg, Norway) made a long run up the left wing and sent a cross along the goaline towards
Bas Beverwijk (Zwolle, Netherlands), who headed it in for the equalizer.
With a 1-1 tie coming out of the halftime break, the Pioneers wasted little time in putting the momentum squarely on their side as senior
Andreas Olson (Oppeid, Norway) streaked up the right wing and sent a low cross into the box, where Turan sent a perfect one-touch shot into the net for a 2-1 lead.
Turan gave the Pioneers a 3-1 cushion in the 64th minute as he headed in a cross from junior
Alex Billington (Brighton, England).
The insurance goal proved to be important as Michael Cunningham scored for the Redhaks in the 83rd minute to make it a one-goal led for the Pioneers, but they held off any further attempts by the visitors to tie the game and came away with the victory.
The Pioneers outshot the Redhawks by a 24-3 differential and held a 13-1 advantage.
Goalkeeper
Mathias Spinnars (Ramnas, Sweden) earned the win in his first start of the season, while Michael Scavone made nine saves in the loss.
