Women's Basketball Cruises Past Mercy, 81-59

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 8, 2012) – The C.W. Post women's basketball team played a strong second half and claimed an 81-59 win over Mercy College on Wednesday evening in an East Coast Conference clash at the Pratt Recreation Center.
C.W. Post improves to 17-7 overall and 8-4 in ECC action while Mercy dips to 2-20 overall and 2-10 in the conference.
Senior guard
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 6-13 from field goal range and went 5-7 at the free throw line. Freshman guard
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) added 15 points while junior center
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) added 13 points with three blocks.
Mercy was led in scoring by Jasmine Williams, who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. MarQuesha Moore chipped in 14 points while Simone Williams and Talia Beaulieu each scored 10 points.
The Mavericks registered their only lead of the game in the opening minutes when they led by two points. With the game tied at 8-8, sophomore guard
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) scored a lay-in to give their Pioneers a 10-8 lead that they never relinquished.
The Pioneers grew their lead in the first half to as many as 10 (23-13) with 10:32 to play after a free throw from Peters. The Mavericks tried to turn things around and cut the lead down to two (34-32) with 2:30 to play before the Pioneers answered back with a 5-1 run to end the half. C.W. Post led, 39-33 at the break.

The Pioneers turned up the heat in the second half as they improved their shooting to 45 percent. A jumper from Kopp at 10:42 started up a 12-3 that built the lead up to 19 (70-51) with 7:01 to play.
Neither team scored a basket in the final 3:19 of regulation.
C.W. Post finished the game shooting .425 (31-73) from the floor and went 12-17 at the line. Mercy shot .322 (19-59) from the field and was 21-33 at the line. The Pioneers won out on the boards with a 54-37 advantage.
C.W. Post returns to action Saturday, Feb. 11 when it travels to play at St. Thomas Aquinas at 1 p.m.
Coaches from both teams wore sneakers in support of the American Cancer Society's "Coaches vs. Cancer" initiative.
