Women's Basketball Takes It To The Hoop In 78-60 Win Over No. 23 District Of Columbia

Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 25, 2012) – Junior forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) matched her career-high of 24 points to lead C.W. Post past 23rd-ranked University of the District of Columbia, 78-60, in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.
 
C.W. Post improves its record to 20-8 overall and 11-5 in the ECC while District of Columbia drops to 21-5 overall and 12-4 in conference action.  The win also improves head coach Deirdre Moore's coaching record at C.W. Post to 70.
 
The win secures the No. 4 seed in the upcoming ECC Championships and the Pioneers will host the No. 5 seed NYIT on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at.
 
Marciniak shot 10-14 from the field, pulled down nine rebounds and recorded to blocks for the Pioneers.  Sophomore guard Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) added 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists with a block and two steals.  Senior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) along with junior guard Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) and freshman guard Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) each scored 10 points.  Joyner and Williams grabbed seven rebounds.
 
Dohnay Banice led the Firebirds with 15 points on 4-7 shooting from the field and grabbed eight rebounds.  Ty Abilla and Lauren Brittingham each scored 11 points.  Brittingham dished out a game-high nine assists.
 
The Firebirds registered the first lead of the game when Stacey Griffith knocked scored a layup at 19:54.  The Pioneers responded with a jumper from junior center Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) at 19:32 to tie it and took the lead with a layup from Peters at 18:16 and they never looked back.
 
C.W. Post increased its lead to 11 (25-14) in the first half after Williams recorded an and-one at 10:45.
 
The Pioneers held a 34-30 lead at the half and were led by Peters with 13 points.
 
UDC led off the second half with a long range three from Janelle Junior and the Firebirds were able to keep the deficit to single digits through the first eight and a half minutes of play.
 
C.W. Post put the game further out of reach for the Firebirds via a 12-0 run that started with a layup from Joyner at 12:10 and was capped off by a layup from Williams at 8:30, giving the Pioneers a 60-42 cushion. 
 
UDC ended the short drought with a pair of free throws from Banice at 8:14 but the Pioneers came back with a 9-2 spurt to boost their lead to 69:46 with 7:19 to play.
 
The Pioneers recorded their highest lead of the game at 24 (75-51) after another layup from Marciniak.
 
Prior to the game, Moore and the entire team honored seniors Joyner and Lutz, who were playing in their final regular season game.
