Joyner Scores 24, Leads Women's Basketball Past Rival NYIT, 73-68

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 1, 2012) – Senior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored a game-high 24 points to lead C.W. Post over NYIT, 73-68, in a pivotal East Coast Conference women's basketball clash Wednesday evening during “Post Pride Day” festivities at the Pratt Recreation Center.

C.W. Post improves to 15-7 overall and 6-3 in the ECC.  The loss drops NYIT to 13-8 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

Joyner converted 7-15 from the floor and was a near perfect 10-11 from the charity stripe.  Junior forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) nearly had a double-double in the game with nine points and 10 rebounds along with two assists and a block.  Sophomore guard Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) and graduate forward Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) each chipped in nine points.  Peters also pulled down nine boards off the glass.

The Bears opened the game with a 7-0 advantage that included a jumper and a long three from Chloe Johnson.  The Pioneers struck back with a 10-0 burst with a pair of baskets from Peters and Joyner and a layup from Marciniak.

The teams tied the game up twice before Lutz drained a three at 10:26 to give the Pioneers a 15-12 edge.  The Bears tied the game at 32 after Johnson poured in another triple with 1:05 to play.    Demitra Apergis converted a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining after a foul was called on freshman forward Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) to boost the Bears' lead to 34-21 leading into halftime. 

NYIT kept up with its lead the first two minutes of the second half until the Pioneers tied the game at 38 with a jumper from Marciniak.  The Bears regained the lead on a jumper from Sabrina Moore at 15:13 but the Pioneers responded with a jumper from Joyner at 14:18. 

The teams played through five more ties over minutes of play before NYIT got the lead back with a free throw from Demitra Apergis at 3:43.  The game was tied once again (65-64) after Johnson converted a pair of free throws with 1:21 to play.

C.W. Post got help from Williams and Joyner, who scored back to back layups in the final minute, to claim the lead for good.  Sophomore guard Kenyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.) swished two free throws with seven seconds to play to ice over the game.

C.W. Post finished the game shooting .413 (26-63) from field goal range and went 18-23 at the free throw line.  NYIT shot .411 (23-56) from the field and went 16-22 at the line.  The Pioneers held a 45-32 edge in rebounds.

NYIT boasted four players who had double figures in scoring.  Johnson led with 19 while Nikki Jo Rotolo added 18.  Apergis scored 15 and Sabrinna Moore added 12 points along with five steals.

C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Connecticut to face Bridgeport at 5 p.m.
