Men's Basketball Falls to Franklin Pierce in Season Opener, 81-70
Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. (Nov. 9, 2012) - Franklin Pierce University overcame an early Pioneer lead to earn an 81-70 victory over the LIU Post men's basketball team in the season opener for both teams on Friday evening at the Fieldhouse at the Southern New Hampshire Tournament.
The Pioneers begin the season 0-1 while FPU goes to 1-0.
The Pioneers were led by 19 points from both senior
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) and
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.), with sophomore
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) scoring 14 points and pulling in a game high 16 boards.
For FPU, Ryen Vilmont scored a game-high 22 points, while Eric Jean-Guillaume scored 13 points and added 6 assists, and Ellis Cooper scored 11 and pulled down 12 boards.
After the opening minutes swung back and forth, the Pioneers engineered an early lead, up 31-24 with 6:53 left in the first half. But a 13-3 run to close out the half by the Ravens reversed the lead and saw the Pioneers facing a 37-34 deficit at the break.
LIU Post kept the game close during the second half, pulling to a three-point deficit on several occasions, and even cut the lead to 55-54 with 8:26 to play, but the Ravens were able to stretch the lead to 10 points with 3:12 to play and the Pioneers could pull no closer.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow with a 7:30 p.m. contest against the host Penmen.
