Second Half Charge Leads Women's Basketball To Season-Opening Victory Over Adelphi, 82-81

Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) sank a free throw shot with 22 seconds left in regulation as LIU Post defeated Adelphi University, 82-81, in its season opener Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's basketball clash at the Recreation Center.
LIU Post improves to 1-0 while Adelphi slips to 0-1.

Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) and sophomore
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) each led the Pioneers with a game-high 21 points. Senior
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Peters each scored 14 in the game while Marciniak also pulled down 11 rebounds. Senior
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) scored 10 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Pioneers shot .492 (29 of 59) from field goal range, including 8 for 15 from three point range, and was 16-for-30 at the charity stripe. Adelphi shot .412 (28 of 68) from field range and was 18-for-23 at the line. The Pioneers held a 46-36 advantage on the glass.
The Panthers closed out the first half on a 9-2 run to lead 43-33.
In the second half, the Pioneers mounted a comeback and were led by Caggiano's 16 points in the frame. They opened the half on a 12-2 run and took a 46-45 lead after a pair of made free throws from Williams.
The teams exchanged the lead several times throughout the half. The Panthers tied the game up at 81-all on a 3-pointer from Kelly Mannix with 27 seconds in the game before Peters converted 1 of 2 at the line to give the Pioneers the lead. Adelphi's Samantha Milhaven attempted a 3-pointer with nine seconds missed along with Sade Jackson's layup attempt at the 4-second mark.
LIU Post returns to action on Nov. 24 against Felician College as part of the Dowling College Holiday Tournament.
