ECC Tabs Jorgensen and Billington For Weekly Honors
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2012) – The East Coast Conference released its weekly awards and two LIU Post men's soccer players earned accolades, as junior goalkeeper
Marco Jorgensen (Copenhagen, Denmark) earned Defensive Player of the Week and freshman
Alex Billington (Preston, England) was named Rookie of the Week.
Jorgensen helped the Pioneers to two wins in two games this week to solidify first place in the ECC with six saves and two goals allowed. In a matchup against Mercy, he made four saves to earn the victory, then followed with two stops against Bridgeport in a matchup of the top two teams in the ECC.
Billington scored his first collegiate goal and added one assist in an important 2-0 week for the Pioneers. Both goals were the equalizers after the nation's top ranked team fell behind early. He assisted on the tying goal in the 31st minute against Mercy, and scored the tying goal against Bridgeport in the 40th minute.
The LIU Post men's soccer team took over the top spot in the most recent NCSAA Top-25 poll, making history as the highest ranking in program history. The Pioneers responded accordingly as they two games to push their win streak to 11 games, matching the same streak the Pioneers had last year to open the season. With the 11-0 record and a 6-0 slate in conference play, the Pioneers take over sole possession of first place in the ECC. LIU Post earned identical 3-1 victories over both Mercy and Bridgeport after falling behind early to both teams. However, the potent offense of the Pioneers took control in both games as the Pioneers outshot both opponents 34-14 in two games. Five different Pioneers accounted for the goals, led by
Kieran Mercer's (Brighton, England) two scores. The Pioneers have a key non-conference match this week against UMass-Lowell, who is No. 6 in the nation and No. 2 in the East region, this Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Brookville, N.Y.
