Box Score
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2101) – The top-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team rallied from an early deficit to take down Mercy College for a 3-1 victory in East Coast Conference men's soccer action on Wednesday evening.
The Pioneers improve to 10-0 on the season and 5-0 in East Coast Conference, while Mercy slips to 7-3-2 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
The Mavericks struck first, as William Koki connected with Danny Leon, Jr., who tapped it into the lower right corner for a 1-0 lead.
However, freshman
Alex Billington (Preston, England) came off the bench and provided as spark as he assisted
Bas Beverwijk's (Zwolle, Netherlands) goal at 30:45 to even the score, and the teams remained deadlocked through the halftime break and almost twenty minutes into the second half.
But two quick scores within the span of one minute was the turning point of the game for the Pioneers. Freshman
Johan Wallin (Sollentuna, Sweden) scored an unassisted goal at 63:45, then
Eirik Bjoernoe (Randaberg, Norway) assisted on
Kieran Mercer's (Brighton, England) score at 64:12 to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead and a firm hold on the game.
Junior goalkeeper
Marco Jorgensen (Copenhagen, Denmark) came up with four saves in earning the victory, as the Pioneers held a 17-10 edge in shots, while Mercy had a 6-4 corner kick advantage.
Mercy's Nick Papas turned away six shots for the Mavericks.
LIU Post will look to match last year's streak of 11 wins to open the season when it hosts Bridgeport on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 3 p.m.
