Lutz's 16 Carries Women's Basketball To 75-57 Win Over Bridgeport

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 4, 2012) – Graduate forward Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) led the charge with a game-high 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-4 from long range to lead C.W. Post to its first victory of 2012 with a 75-57 win over the University of Bridgeport in East Coast Conference women's basketball Wednesday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center.
 
C.W. Post improves to 9-5 overall and gained its first ECC victory of the season to improve to 1-2 while Bridgeport slips to 3-10 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
 
C.W. Post rushed out of the gate in the first half with a 10-3 run that included a pair of threes from senior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Kenyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.).
 
The Purple Knights caught up with an 8-2 run of their own that was capped off with a triple from Marie Biondi to trail the Pioneers, 12-11, with 11:29 to go in the half.
 
C.W. Post broke free with a 16-5 spurt that lasted nearly six and a half minutes and pushed its lead to 28-16.  Lutz scored six of her points in that span.
 
Bridgeport countered with a late scoring run with seven unanswered points to close out the first half with C.W. Post leading, 33-27.
 
C.W. Post was 11-for-26 (.423) from field goal range in the half and was spurred on by junior forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who led all scorers with eight points and six rebounds.  Bridgeport was 9-for-31 (.290) from the field and was led in scoring by Edna Marant who had seven points.
 
The Pioneer offense picked right back up in the second half and blistered Bridgeport's defense with a 22-5 run that carried through the first 10 minutes of the frame. 
 
Bridgeport cut the lead down to 19 (61-42) after an and-one from Marant at 5:25 but the Purple Knights could not catch up to the Pioneers.
 
C.W. Post finished the game shooting 24 of 51 (.471) on the floor, including 6-of-11 behind the arc, and outrebounded the Purple Knights, 56-30.  The Pioneers got a major boost from their bench with 33 points. 
 
Marciniak finished the game with 13 points while Joyner added 10 for the Pioneers.  Equally impressive was junior Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.), who scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
Bridgeport finished the game shooting 19 of 67 from the field (.284) and was led in scoring by Marant and Julia Colley, who each had 16 points.  Colley also pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double.
 
C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday when it hosts St. Thomas Aquinas at 1:30 p.m.
