No. 23 Dowling Shoots Past Women's Basketball, 69-57

OAKDALE, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2012) – No. 23 Dowling College used a strong second half to 69-57 win over C.W. Post Saturday afternoon in an East Coast Conference women's basketball clash at Golden Lion Gym.
 
Dowling remains unbeaten in the ECC with 9-0 record and boosts its overall record to 16-3.  The loss drops C.W. Post to 14-7 overall and 5-4 in conference action.
 
The Golden Lions were led in scoring by Julia Koppl with 19 points on 6-15 shooting from field goal range.  Sarah Schicher added 16 points and Christine Varrelle.
 
The Pioneers were led by senior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) with 15 points, shooting 5-15 from the floor while sophomore guard Shayna Gatling (Baldwin, N.Y.) and freshman guard Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) each had eight points.
 
The Golden Lions scored the game's first basket on a layup from Connie Simmons.  The Pioneers answered with a jumper from junior forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.).  Dowling reclaimed the lead on a layup from Koppl. 
 
C.W. Post took its first lead when graduate forward Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) converted three free throws at 14:04.  Dowling stole the lead back with a three from Koppl.
 
The lead went back and forth until Kopp hit a pair of free throws at 10:50 to take a 14-13 lead and held onto it for the remainder of the half.  The Pioneers tied the score at 24-24 with 3:07 to play with a basket from Gatling.  The Golden Lions closed out the half outscoring the Pioneers 7-2.
 
Dowling led 31-28 at the half.
 
Dowling kept the offensive pressure on in the second half and ran its lead up to 20 (60-40) with 5:22 left to play in regulation. 
 
The Golden Lions finished the game shooting 22-56 (.393) in the game, including 19-23 from the free throw line.  C.W. Post shot 21-57 (.368) from the field and went 9-11 at the line.  Dowling held a 37-34 advantage on the boards. 
 
C.W. Post is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts NYIT on Wednesday at 5 p.m. as part of Post Pride Day.
