Women's Basketball Travels to Merrimack For a 7 p.m. Game Tonight
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2012) – C.W. Post's women's basketball will step out of conference for a road game against Merrimack, tonight at 7 p.m.
After winning five games in a row, that streak was snapped this past Saturday for the Pioneers as the team lost a tough game to the District of Columbia on the road, 75-72. The Firebirds held the edge with inside scoring, putting in 38 points inside the paint. Also, C.W. Post was only able to convert on seven of 15 free throw attempts while the Firebirds went 20-23 from the charity stripe.
Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) led the effort for the Pioneers with 18 points on four threes hit with C.W. Post falling to 13-6 overall and a 5-3 conference mark.
Despite the previous loss, C.W. Post still holds a 9.9 average scoring margin over opponents. The team is also shooting 41.4 percent from the field while opponents are being held to 37.0 percent shooting. The Pioneers have been aggressive on the boards with 46.5 rebounds a game and have denied 3.1 shots per game.
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) has connected on 6.5 field goals a game to achieve a team leading 17.0 point per game average. The lone other Pioneer scoring in double-figures is
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 10.6 points per game to go along with 9.6 rebounds. She is also averaging a 1.0 block per game to lead the team.
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) and
Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) have provided good shooting for the team with Kopp having a 55.9 shooting percentage and Lutz connecting on 36 shots from beyond the arc, both team leaders.
Merrimack, out of the Northeast-10 Conference, currently sits at 3-13 overall record while being 2-11 inside the conference. The latest decision came this past Saturday with a 77-69 defeat at American International. While being outrebounded by a 37-27 margin, the Warriors did manage a 51.7 shooting percentage during the contest. However, the team was only able to make four of 10 free throw attempts while American International went 16 -22 from the line. Gennifer Roy was the leading scorer for Merrimack behind 24 points while also tallying six rebounds and four assists.
As a team, Merrimack is being outscored by opponents by a 9.1 point per game average. The efficient shooting has been consistent for most of the year as the season's overall shooting percentage sits at 43.7 percent. Turnovers have plagued the team with a 20.7 turnover per game average while also being outrebounded by 3.1 boards a game.
Roy leads the team in the scoring column with 16.7 points a game and also holds the lead in steals with a total of 21 on the season. Kelly Schatzlein is shooting 56.1 percent to lead the Warriors and is averaging 14.8 points and 9.9 rebounds a game. Chloe Rothman is dishing out 5.1 assists per game to help the offensive flow while also scoring 10.3 points a game.
These two squads have not met since Dec. 29, 2004 with Merrimack coming away with a 71-45 win over the Pioneers. However, this year, C.W. Post is 4-2 against Northeast-10 opponents.
