Women's Basketball Holds Off Merrimack, 74-71, In Wild Finish

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (Jan. 23, 2012) – C.W. Post staved off late heroics by Merrimack College,74-71, in a non-conference women's basketball clash Monday evening at Hammel Court.
 
C.W. Post improves its overall record to 14-6 while Merrimack drops to 3-14.
 
The Pioneers boasted five players who scored in double digits and were led by senior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), who had 18 points on 6-13 shooting from the floor.  Sophomore guard Kenyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.) chipped in 13 points.  Junior center Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.), junior forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) each had 10 points.  Marciniak also pulled down 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
 
Both teams played a physical game on the court and exchanged the lead 12 times with five tie ups throughout the game.
 
The Warriors led 7-4 early in the game before the Pioneers turned the game around with a 9-0 run to go ahead, 13-4 with 13:28 to play.  Merrimack outscore the Pioneers 5-3 during the last two and a half minutes to take a 36-35 lead at halftime.
 
At the break, C.W. Post was 13-36 from the field, including 2-11 from 3-point range, and went 7-8 at the charity stripe.  Merrimack was 13-31 and 1-3 from behind the arc while shooting 9-13 at the line. 
 
In the second half, the teams once again battled back and forth for the lead and exchanged it seven times with one tie up. 
 
The Pioneers led 71-65 with 1:16 left in regulation and the game looked to be over until Merrimack drilled home two unanswered threes from Katie Ganser and Allison Wagner to cut the lead to 72-71 and brought the Warriors back into the game.
 
The Pioneers drew a foul with 16 seconds to play and Joyner sank both shots to ice the game over.
 
C.W. Post finished the game shooting 28-72 (.389) from the floor and was 13-20 at the line.  Merrimack shot 25-61 from the field and was 17-26 at the line.  The Warriors also held a 50-43 advantage on the boards.
