Women's Basketball Roars Past Mercy, 86-74

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 11, 2012) – Senior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored a season-high 28 points to lead C.W. Post to an 86-74 victory over Mercy College Wednesday evening in an East Coast Conference women's basketball clash at Mercy Gymnasium.
 
C.W. Post wins its third straight game and improves its overall record to 11-5 and 3-2 in conference play.  Mercy slips to 0-12 overall and 0-4 in the ECC.
 
Joyner finished 12-24 from the floor and added seven rebounds, three steals and three assists in the winning effort.  Junior forward Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) was 8-10 from the floor with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Junior guard Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) added 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers, along with three rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Graduate forward Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) added 10 points, including two triples.
 
Jasmine Williams led the Mavericks with 23 points while teammate MarQuesha Moore poured in 12.
 
C.W. Post opened the game with a 9-3 run but the Mavericks caught up and took the lead with an 11-4 run that was capped off with a layup from Talia Beaulieu at 11:34.
 
The home team commanded a lead throughout most of the half but the Pioneers found their groove and roared back with a 14-5 run to close out the first half.
 
Mercy came out in the second half and quickly changed the momentum back into its favor with a 14-2 burst to lead 50-41 at 16:23.
 
The Pioneers responded with a 12-2 run of their own that was highlighted with three triples from Joyner, Caggiano and Lutz.
 
C.W. Post never relinquished the lead and built it to as many as 17 (85-68) after a layup from sophomore guard Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) with 56 seconds to play.
 
C.W. Post finished shooting 35-77 (.455) from field goal range and outrebounded the Mavericks, 55-40.  Mercy shot 29-69 (.420) and went 15-28 at the free throw line.
 
C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Molloy College at 1:30 p.m. at the Pratt Recreation Center.
