Aiken's 26 Leads Women's Basketball Past Mercy, 84-76

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 5, 2011) – Senior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) scored a game-high 26 points to lead C.W. Post over Mercy College, 84-76, in an East Coast Conference women's basketball contest Saturday afternoon at the Mercy College gym.
C.W. Post improves to 10-10 overall and 8-7 in the ECC while Mercy slips to 5-15 and 3-12 in conference action.
C.W. Post converted 26 of 58 (.448) from field goal range and 28-for-41 from the charity stripe. Mercy converted 24 of 67 from the field and 26 of 41 at the free throw line. The Mavericks had a big advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Pioneers by a 55-34 count.
Mercy led the game by a small margin through the first five minutes of the game until sophomore forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) swished a pair of free throws to give C.W. Post a 9-8 lead.
The Pioneers increased their lead to double figures and capped off the half with a jumper from Aiken at the 3-second mark to lead, 45-32. Marciniak led the Pioneers with 15 points while Aiken had 13.
In the second half, the Pioneers never relinquished their lead but fended off a late comeback attempt by the Mavericks with just over four minutes left in the game after Ashley Borofsky nailed a long three to cut the lead to 75-71 with 4:13 to play.
C.W. Post pulled away with an 8-2 spurt to secure their win. Simone Williams scored the final basket with a 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining.
Marciniak finished the game with 17 points while Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) and Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Jasmine Williams recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 16 points. Simone Williams scored 23 points and Borofsky added 20.
C.W. Post returns to action when it travels to play at Dowling College on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
