Women's Basketball Stopped At Bridgeport, 62-57

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 3, 2011) – The C.W. Post women's basketball team saw a second-half lead slip through its hands as the University of Bridgeport rallied to defeat the Pioneers,62-57, in an East Coast Conference women's basketball clash Thursday evening at Hubbell Gym.
With the win, Bridgeport improves to 10-11 overall and 8-6 in conference play. C.W. Post slips to 9-10 overall and 7-7 in the ECC.
Bridgeport converted 23-of-54 from field goal range (.426). C.W. Post converted 22-of-58 from the field, including 7-of-17 from 3-point range.
Aziza Patterson scored a game-high 16 points to lead Bridgeport.
The Pioneers led 28-17 with 4:01 to play in the first half courtesy of a 9-0 run. Bridgeport ended the half on a 5-0 run to close the Pioneers' lead to 28-22.
In the second half, the Pioneers led by as many as nine (37-28) with 14:59 to play before the Purple Knights came back with a 9-0 run to retake the lead on a jumper from Birman at 11:31.
C.W. Post tied the game when senior forward Anthia Smith (Elmira, N.Y.) scored on a layup and added the and-1 at 6:30. Bridgeport shifted the balance back in its own favor when Julia Colley knocked down a jumper.
The Pioneers battled to steal the lead back (53-52) on a jumper from senior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) at 2:44.
The Purple Knights responded in their next possession with a pair of free throws from Kelly Keil and held onto the lead for the remainder of the game.
Keil finished the game with 13 points while Elsebeth Birman added 11 points and Julia Colley and Elinor Avny each scored 10.
Junior guard #Felicia Joyner# (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led the Pioneers in scoring with 13 points, including three behind the arc. Aiken added 12 points, six assists and a steal.
C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday when the team travels to face Mercy College at 1 p.m.
