Women's Basketball Locks Up the Fourth Seed With Win Over Queens, 59-53

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (February 23, 2011)
– The C.W. Post women's basketball team used a strong second half to defeat conference foe Queens, 59-53. Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) scored 16 of her 24 points in the second half to help propel the Pioneers to victory.

The Pioneers improve to 13-12 overall and 11-9 in the ECC, locking up the fourth spot in the playoffs. Queens drops to 10-17 on the season, with a 9-11 conference mark that puts them fifth in the seeding for playoffs.

Both squads went toe-to-toe during the first half, with the Knights taking a two-point lead into the locker room. Each team started out slow, with the score tied at eight a piece with 8:48 remaining in the half. However, a flow developed for the teams with the score improving over the course of the final eight minutes. Aiken turned on her game in those final minutes, finishing with eight in the half. Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.)also contributed eight points in the first stanza, scoring six of the Pioneers' first eight points. The sophomore also grabbed seven rebounds.

Chloe Johnson was a force both down low and outside for the Knights, finishing the first half with a game-high nine points. She also grabbed four rebounds. Christine Harnishfeger tallied seven points during the half.

The second half was much of the same, with the lead going back and forth, contributing to a game that experience 10 ties and 13 lead changes. With the score tied at 42 a piece with 7:40 left in the game, the Pioneers turned up the pressure and offense to go on a 13-3 run to push a lead to 10, the biggest of the game for either team. Aiken was the leader on offense and defense for the Pioneers, scoring 16 points over the course of the second half while also grabbing three of her four steals. Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) went scoreless during the first half, but quickly accumulating nine points during the Pioneers' run in the second half. 

The Pioneers finished the game shooting 34.5 percent on the game, compared to a 28.6 percent shot by the Knight s. Marciniak finished the game with a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds. She helped contribute to a 26-14 points in the paint advantage C.W. Post held. The Pioneers also tallied 14 fastbreak points, compared to none scored by Queens.

Johnson finished with 21 points and seven rebounds on the game despite turning the ball over seven times. Harnishfeger went 13-16 from the free throw line, finishing the game with 16 points to go along with four assists and two steals. 

Next up for the Pioneers will be the last regular season game on the season this Saturday against Bridgeport. The game will honor the seniors on the Pioneer roster, as tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. in the Pratt Recreation Center.
