Pace Uses Clutch Free Throws to Defeat Women's Basketball, 65-62

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2011) – The C.W. Post Pioneers women's basketball team started a five-game non-conference stretch tonight with a tough loss on the road against Pace, 65-62. Four players ended the night in double-figures for the Setters, while the Pioneers shot 33.3 percent from the field.
C.W. Post drops to 5-4 on the season while Northeast-10 opponent, Pace, improves to 7-1 thus far.
The home team built a lead as large as 11 during the first half as Brittany Shields put in two of her 11 first half points on a layup with 10:44 left in the opening half, giving Pace the 27-16 lead. However, the visiting Pioneers fought back to pull within two points on a 9-0 lead to bring things to 27-25 in almost exactly five minutes.
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) managed to find teammate
Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) beyond the arc as Lutz connected on a shot from long range with 20 seconds before halftime to the intermission deficit to five, 41-36. Lutz finished the first half with 14 points as she connected four three-pointers.
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) helped C.W. Post hold a 24-17 advantage on the glass with seven first half rebounds.
The two teams battled during the second half, as neither squad was able to build a lead larger than six points over the course of the 20 minutes half. C.W. Post climbed all the way back from the original 11 point disadvantage during the first half to earn a six point led with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.
Pace then took the lead back for good with nearly two minutes remaining on a Carol Johnson layup, giving the Setters a 59-58 advantage.
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) brought C.W. Post back within one point with five seconds left, however, Maral Javadifar connected on her two, double bonus free throws with two seconds left and the Pioneers did not have a chance to get off a last-second shot.
Javadifar finished the game with a team-high of 14 points for Pace while also dishing out five assists. Shields finished her evening with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Johnson and Kerri White contributed 12 points apiece.
Lutz finished the night with 18 points behind four three-pointers made, while Joyner took the game-high in total points with 21. Marciniak pulled down 12 rebounds to help the Pioneers control hold a 49-37 rebounding advantage despite the loss and also sent back three blocked shots.
C.W. Post will next be in action in exactly one week, as the Pioneers will host the Golden Knights of Saint Rose in a non-conference game next Friday, Dec. 16, at 6 p.m. inside the Pratt Recreation Center on the campus of C.W. Post.
