Women's Basketball Begins Five-Game, Non-Conference Stretch Friday Evening at Pace

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 7, 2011) – The Pioneers women's basketball team will step out of conference play until Jan. 4, 2012 as the team will begin a five-game non-conference slate starting on Friday, Dec. 9.  The team will travel to Pace University of the Northeast-10 on Friday to play. 

C.W. Post will be looking to get back on the winning track after dropping the last two games, falling to 5-3 on the season that includes a 0-2 conference mark. 

The latest decision game in a heart-breaking setback on Tuesday, Dec. 6 as the Pioneers were defeated 76-74 to the NYIT Bears on a jumper with seconds left in overtime.  A Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lay-up originally tied the game at 74 with 28 seconds left.  Marciniak finished tied with Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) with the team lead of 20 points to go along with 13 rebounds for the junior forward.  Junior center, Samantha Kopp (Franklinvile, N.Y.), tallied a game-high 15 rebounds with nine points and two blocks as well.

The women's basketball team is now averaging 74.9 points per game, putting them second in the conference while also holding an average 8.0 points per game margin over opponents.  The squad is also tied for first in three point field goal percentage at 31.2 percent.  Coach Deirdre Moore's team is also ranked first in the ECC in rebounds (45.3 per game) and assists (17.1 per game).

Joyner puts herself in the top five scorers in the conference with 17.8 points per game.  She also is second with an efficient shooting percentage of 45.0 percent.  Marciniak puts herself third among individuals with a 9.6 rebound per game average to matchup with her 10.8 points per game. 

The backcourt of Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) and Kenyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.) has combined to help the Pioneers achieve the highest assist per game output in the conference.  Caggiano ranks fourth with 5.1 assists a game while Sears is ranked ninth in both assists per game (3.8) and steals per game (2.1).

Friday's evening host team will be the Setters of Pace, who are off to a 6-1 overall record that marks a 5-1 Northeat-10 conference mark also.  The lone loss of the season for the Setters came back on Dec.3 against the College of Saint Rose in a 75-64 defeat.  The team's current conference mark places them tied for second in the conference with Franklin Pierce. 

Pace last contest came this past Tuesday, Dec. 6, in a home victory over Adelphi, 70-59.  During the game, senior forward, Brittany Shields, reached her 1,000th point of her game behind a 26 point effort in the win while also pulling down 12 rebounds.  Kerri White, a senior guard, contributed 19 points and four steals for the Setters. 

Shields now puts herself second in the Northeast-10 in scoring with a 19.6 point per game mark thus far in the season.  The forward has also pulled down 9.4 boards a game to put her fifth in the conference.  She has also connected on 31 free throws through seven games and is currently leading Pace with 17 assists. 

Carol Johnson has also performed well at her guard position, hauling in 5.7 rebounds and 9.4 points a game.  Kerri White is currently leading the team with 2.3 steals a game and has connected on 12 shots from beyond the arc to lead the squad. 

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. start on Friday evening on the Pleasantville, N.Y. campus.  Live Stats and Live Video will be provided for those who cannot attend the game.
