Women's Basketball Upended By No. 19 Franklin Pierce, 66-61

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 30, 2011) – C.W. Post mounted a strong second half comeback but it was not enough to overcome an early deficit and 19th-ranked Franklin Pierce held on for a 66-61 victory in the final game of the C.W. Post Women's Basketball Winter Classic Friday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Franklin Pierce improves to 8-3 overall while C.W. Post drops to 8-5. The loss ended a three-game win streak for the Pioneers.
Marielle Giroud scored a game-high 24 points, including her 1,000
th career, to lead the Ravens in the game. Franklin Pierce shot .522 (24 of 46) from field goal range.
C.W. Post was led in points by junior forward
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.), who scored a career-high 19 points in the match. The Pioneers shot .353 (24 of 68) in the game and held a 40-37 advantage on the glass.
Franklin Pierce jumped out to a 15-9 lead to start the game and led for the entire half, building its highest lead of the game with a 10-point advantage (25-15) with 3:22 to play. The Ravens led 27-19 at the half.
In the second half, the Pioneers opened with a 10-2 run that tied the game at 29-all that included three layups from Kopp and a three-pointer from senior forward
Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.). Kopp converted a pair of free throws at 15:39 and gave the Pioneers their first lead of the game.
The Ravens responded with a three-pointer from Kate McDonald at 15:39 before the Pioneers tied the game up for the second time with a free throw from Kopp at 15:30.
Franklin Pierce grabbed the lead once again with a free throw from Hurd followed by a jumper from Tiffany Johnson. C.W. Post regained the lead with a layup from senior guard
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) at 12:20, which they held onto over the next two and a half minutes before the Ravens scored on a layup from Giroud at 8:47 to give them a slim 45-44 lead.
The teams exchanged the lead over the next several minutes until the Ravens took the lead for good on a layup from Jewel White at 5:33. The Pioneers came as close as within three (61-58) with 1:28.
White finished with 21 points for Franklin Pierce.
Peters finished with 14 points while Joyner had 13 points for the Pioneers.
C.W. Post is back in action on Jan. 4 at home against Bridgeport at 5 p.m.
