Women's Basketball Cruises Past UMass Lowell, 93-69

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 29, 2011) – The C.W. Post Pioneers showed no signs of slowing down from their pre-holiday break win streak as they took down UMass Lowell, 93-69, in a non-conference women's basketball clash at the Pratt Recreation Center Thursday evening as part of the Winter Classic.
C.W. Post improves to 8-4 overall while UMass Lowell slips to 4-6. The Pioneers will take on Franklin Pierce on Friday at 5 p.m. UMass Lowell will play the University of the District of Columbia at 3 p.m.
The teams played a close game through much of the first half. The Pioneers led through the first four and a half minutes of play until the River Hawks tied the game at 11 on a 3-pointer from Erika Sjoberg. UML took its first lead of the game when Bianca Simmons converted a pair of free throws at 14:52.
The Pioneers regained the lead with a trey from senior forward
Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) at 13:42 and never gave it up for the remainder of the game. C.W. Post closed out the half on a 6-0 spurt and its lead to 13 with a 46-33 lead.
C.W. Post shot .484 (15 of 31) from field goal range, including 4-for-9 from long range and outrebounded the River Hawks, 28-21, on the boards. Lowell shot .242 (8 of 33) from the field and was 14-for-16 at the charity stripe.
Senior guard
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and sophomore Kenyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.) each scored nine points to lead C.W. Post in the half. Simmons led UML with 13 points at the break.
The Pioneers remained a comfortable lead in the second half even as Lowell stayed on their heels with a 13-5 run that cut the lead to eight (56-48) with 13:31 left to play. C.W. Post answered the charge with two quick baskets from junior forward
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore forward
Shayna Gatling (Baldwin, N.Y.).
UML once again slice C.W. Post lead down to nine (65-56) after a pair of free throws from Wilson before Lutz hit her third 3-pointer of the game keep the lead to double digits.
C.W. Post outscored UML 15-5 in the final five minutes of play to close out the game.
C.W. Post finished the game shooting .507 (34 of 67) from the field and outrebounded UML, 53-41, on the glass. UMass Lowell shot .273 (18 of 66) from the field and went 28-for-35 at the line. One noteworthy stat showed C.W. Post outscoring UMass Lowell in the paint, 46-14.
Gatling scored a game-high 16 pionts on 6-of-10 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds. Sears finished with 15 while Joyner scored 12. Sophomore guard
Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) scored 11 points and Lutz finished with nine.
Simmons led the River Hawks with 16 points on 5-of-24 from field goal range while Wilson and Sjoberg each had 13.
