Solid Shooting Sends Women's Basketball Past Saint Rose, 59-50

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 16, 2011) – C.W. Post snapped a three-game losing skid by defeating Saint Rose, 59-50, Friday evening in a non-conference women's basketball clash at the Pratt Recreation Center. The win snapped a near 20-year losing streak to the Golden Knights, who came into the game with a 22-1 record against C.W. Post.
C.W. Post improves to 6-4 overall while Saint Rose slips to 7-3. The last Pioneer win against the Golden Knights came on Jan. 13, 1992 with a 69-59 victory on the road.
The Pioneers led 8-4 in the early minutes of play before the Golden Knights caught up with six unanswered points to gain its first lead of the game.
C.W. Post roared back with a 19-2 run, beginning with a 9-0 spurt that began with a jumper from Joyner to tie the game along with an extra point on the play at the free throw line. Freshman
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) nailed down a long three from the top of the key at 5:38 that forced Saint Rose head coach Karen Haag to call time out to refocus her team.
The Golden Knights managed to hold the Pioneers scoreless the final four and a half minutes of play in the half while cutting the lead down with six points to close out the half.
The Pioneers finished the half outscoring the Golden Knights, 21-8, and were led by junior
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Williams who each scored eight points.
In the second half, the Pioneers hot hand had cooled off from the first half as Saint Rose cut the lead down to eight (29-21). C.W. Post ended its nearly seven minute drought as Marciniak converted a pair of free throws at 17:03.
Saint Rose continued to battle C.W. Post for the lead and cut the deficit to one (40-39) with 9:28 to play via a 10-3 run that included three pointers from Gabie Polce and Ashley Rath.
The Pioneers maintained enough control to hang onto their lead with the Golden Knights on their heels. Senior
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) drained a three from the top of the key with 1:15 to play that put the Pioneers ahead, 54-48, and gave them some cushion.
C.W. Post was able to ice over the win with a combined five free throws from Joyner and Williams.
C.W. Post shot .322 (19 of 59) from field goal range and went 18-for-22 at the charity stripe. Saint Rose shot .340 (18 of 53) from the field and was 10-for-21 at the line. The Pioneers dominated on the glass with a 50-34 advantage.
Williams finished the game with a game-high 17 points while Joyner contributed 16 and Marciniak added 15.
Ashley Rath led the Golden Knights with 15 points. Ali Johnson grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
C.W. Post returns to action on Sunday when it hosts No.1-ranked Bentley College at 1:30 p.m.
