Dowling Rallies To Defeat Women's Basketball In OT, 70-69

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2011) – The Dowling Golden Lions remain unbeaten as they rallied from behind early in the game to hand C.W. Post a 70-69 overtime loss in its home opener Wednesday evening in an East Coast Conference women's basketball matchup at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Dowling improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the ECC while C.W. Post slips to 5-2 and 0-1 in conference action. The loss ended a five-game win streak for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers spotted themselves a 7-0 lead early in the game and held the Golden Lions scoreless until the 14:22 when Seja Gamble sank a pair of free throws. The Golden Lions then used a 10-3 run to catch up to the Pioneers in the game and tie the score after Sarah Schicher recorded an “and one” with a layup and free throw.
The Pioneers responded with an 8-0 spurt to add distance that included a pair of treys from graduate
Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.).
The teams battled back and forth and exchanged the lead until Dowling took the reins late in the half and led by four at the break after a long three from Kelly Puwalski at the 48-second mark.
Dowling maintained its lead through the first 12 minutes of play. Senior guard
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) banged down a three at 8:29 that tied the game at 46-all. Dowling's Connie Simmons converted a pair of free throws to reclaim the lead but Joyner added another from behind the arc at 6:28.
Dowling tied the game up at 57 when Julia Koppl swished a three at 2:03and teammate Christine Varrelle added another at 1:26 to regain the lead.
Sophomore
Nijah LaCourt (Bronx, N.Y.) scored a layup up with seven seconds remaining in regulation and the Pioneers were able to stop the clock seconds later with a foul that resulted in two free throws from Koppl.
C.W. Post inbounded the ball and got the ball down the court to junior
Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.), who fired a long three through the net with one second to play to force overtime.
In the extra frame, Caggiano knocked down her third three-pointer of the game that tied the game at 67 and freshman
Chelsea Williams (Copiague, N.Y.) sank a pair of free throws with 1:38 to play.
But Dowling won the battle as Koppl drilled a three pointer from the left wing with 1:22 to play to seal the win. C.W. Post nearly won the game when junior
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) attempted a short jumper that bounced out of the basket with 12 seconds on the clock.
Dowling shot 21-for-55 from field goal range, including 10-for-17 from long range. C.W. Post shot 22-for-60 from the field and was 10-for-24 behind the arc. The Pioneers held a 42-35 advantage on the glass.
Joyner led all scorers with 17 while Caggiano chipped in 13 points.
Schicher led Dowling with 16 points while Varrelle had 14. Koppl chipped in 13 and Puwalski added 10.
C.W. Post is off until next Tuesday when it heads next door to play NYIT. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Deirdre Moore presented Joyner with a commemorative basketball for scoring her 1,000th career point in last season's ECC semifinal game against St. Thomas Aquinas.
