Both Basketball Teams Set For Wednesday Action
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2011) – Off to a combined 9-2 start, both the men's and women's basketball squads will look to stay on the winning path with games Wednesday night. The women will be having their first home game, as well as first conference game, against Dowling College at 5 p.m. The men's team will be back on the road for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest against Post University.
C.W. Post's women's basketball team is currently riding a five-game winning streak after dropping the first game of the season. The latest win was over Felician on Sunday, as the Pioneers finished up the Dowling Holiday Tournament with an 82-56 victory over the Falcons. In that game, sophomore
Kenyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.) dropped in a career-high 21 points to lead the squad. Junior
Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) also had a strong performance behind 14 points and eight rebounds. Both Sears and Kopp helped contribute to a Pioneer team that converted on 29 of 35 free throw attempts over the course of the game.
Sears continues her strong start to her sophomore campaign, putting together averages of 10.2 points per game, 3.8 assists per game, and 2.5 steals per game. She has also connected on 10 shots from beyond the arc.
Senior
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) continues to lead the team in scoring with a 17.5 per game output. Junior forward
Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has averaged a double-double to this point, with a 10.8 point per game average to go along with 10.0 rebounds per game. Graduate student
Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) has also given a spark off the bench for C.W. Post as she leads the team in three pointers made with 11 to help her average 9.7 points per game to go along with 5.2 rebounds a game.
The Dowling Golden Lions are off to a 4-0 start and just hosted this past weekend's Holiday Tournament that the Pioneers participated in. On Sunday, the Golden Lions earned a 66-56 victory over Caldwell. Currently, Dowling holds a positive 10.3 average scoring margin over opponents while also averaging a 9.0 rebound per game edge. The interior defense has also been strong, as the team is accumulating 5.8 blocks per game.
Junior Connie Simmons is coming off being named the conference's Player of the Week to lead Dowling. To this point in the season, she is averaging 16.8 points per game to go with 9.8 rebounds per game. She has also connected on 29 of her 33 free throw attempts and is finding the open teammate on plays with 3.8 assists per game.
Simmons is joined in double-figure scoring by senior guard Kelly Puwalski. Puwalski has put together an average of 10.8 points a game with six shots made from beyond the arc. On the defensive side, she is averaging 1.5 blocks a game. Freshman guard, Christine Varrelle, is off to a strong collegiate start, as she has been named conference Rookie of the Week twice behind 9.5 points a game and 7.5 boards per game.
For the C.W. Post men's basketball team, a road match-up against non-conference foe, Post, will be on the schedule for Wednesday night.
The Pioneer men are off to a 4-1 start, with the most recent win also coming on Sunday, No. 27, against the same opponent as the women, Felician. C.W. Post defeated the Falcons at home behind a 92-78 score. Junior swingman
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) led the way with 23 points while senior guard
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) put down 22 points.
Sophomore forward
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Also contributing to a well-rounded performance was senior guard
Terry Coleman (Newburgh, N.Y.). Coleman connected on four shots from long range to help produce 18 points that went with five assists. As a team, the Pioneers connected on 22 of 28 shots from the charity line as well as shooting 54.7 percent from the field.
Bonneau holds a one point advantage over Carberry for the team lead in scoring by one point as the two are averaging 23.8 and 22.8 points per game, respectively. Bonneau has connected on 15 three's on the season to help point production while Carberry is shooting an accurate 56.3 percent from the field.
Allen is leading the team on the glass with 8.4 boards a game while putting in 12.6 points per outing as well. Coleman rounds out the quartet that is averaging in double-figures for the Pioneers with his 10.6 per game output that goes with a team leading 4.4 assists per contest.
The Eagles of Post University are off to a tough start to begin the year, dropping the first four contests the team has played in. The Eagles last played on Nov. 22 against Bridgeport in an 83-77 loss. Thus far, opponents on average are outscoring Post by 16.2 points a game while the Eagles are allowing teams to shoot 51.1 percent. Post is connecting on 6.3 shots made beyond the arc per game while also holding a positive 1.8 average turnover margin against opponents.
Senior guard, Josh Lopez is the lone Eagle averaging in double-figures with 10.3 points a game while playing 33.8 minutes a game. Fellow senior guard, Geraldo Fernandez, and sophomore guard, Zach Krischer, are each averaging 9.3 points per game apiece. Krischer, so far, has averaged 2.0 three's made per game.
Jack Wilcox, a senior guard, has been solid as the team's leading distributor with 4.8 assists a game. He is also been finding the passing lanes well on defense with a per game average of 1.8 steals.
