Men's and Women's Basketball Set to Host Queens on Saturday
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 6, 2011) – On Saturday, January 8, the Pratt Recreation Center will host a basketball doubleheader as both the men's and women's teams go up against the Knights of Queens College. The Pioneer men are looking to extend their winning streak to three games, while the women will look to bounce back after a tough loss to St. Thomas Aquinas, 59-47, on Wednesday night.
The Pioneer women enter the game in the middle of the tightly punched East Coast Conference standings with a 3-2 conference mark, 5-5 overall. Currently the Pioneers are on a two game losing skid with the loss on Wednesday. In the game,
Nicole Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the team with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Reigning ECC Player of the Year
Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) started off the year right where she ended last year, being named ECC Player of the Week during the first week of the season behind two games of 33 and 20 point efforts against NE-10 opponents UMass Lowell and American International. Currently, the senior guard is fourth in the conference in scoring with 18.0 points a game while also distributing the ball to her teammates with a fifth ranked 3.3 assists per game.
Senior forward
Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) also finds herself among the league leaders in the ECC with her 8.1 rebounds per game average. The senior from Connecticut has achieved double-digit rebounds four times during the season, including a season high 12 twice (11/24 at Chestnut Hill, 12/11 at Molloy).
The women Knights of Queens are also looking to end a two-game losing streak, with the latest also coming Wednesday night to the hands of Bridgeport, 70-57. The Knights enter the game also in the middle of the standings with a 3-3 record, 4-9 overall.
Junior guard Amanda Bartlett comes into the game not only the leading scorer for the Knights, but also for the conference. Currently, Bartlett is averaging 22.5 points a game, with her high of 37 points coming in the first game of the season on November 13, 2010 at Pace. Bartlett leads the second best scoring offense in the conference, and also is the main contributor to the best free throw shooting team in the conference with her second best 85 percent shooting from the charity stripe. She is also first in three made per game (3.31).
Bartlett leads the Knights who have earned weekly honors during the course of the 2010-2011 basketball season in the ECC. Bartlett earned Co-Player of the Week during the fifth week of the season, while freshman center Caitlin Hopkins was honored during this past week, week seven of the season, with Rookie of the Week. Another Knight also earned Rookie of the Week during week one of the season, freshman guard Nicole Caggiano. Nicole is the sister of sophomore Pioneer guard
Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.).
The men's game will feature the top two scoring offenses in the conference, which could help prove to be an exciting, fast paced game. Also, with Queens tied at top the standings with a 4-1 conference mark, C.W. Post will look to tie them in the standings with a win, as the Pioneers stand at a 3-2 conference mark, 6-6 overall.
Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) leads the Pioneers into action with his recently earned Player of the Week honors during week seven of the season. The sophomore forward averaged double-double figures to earn the award, with 15 points a game and 10.5 rebounds a game. Kohler used the efforts to push his fifth ranked rebounds per game average up to 6.8, while also averaging 12.3 points a game.
With the number one scoring offense in the league (77.4 ppg) comes the number one scoring leader in the conference as well with junior guard
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) leading the league with his 16.5 points a game average. Bonneau is coming off a 17 point performance in Wednesday's win, chipping in eight rebounds as well. He also leads the league in free throw percentage with a 90.9 percent shooting. Senior forward
Aaron Hall (Syracuse, N.Y.) also ranks among the leaders in scoring, as his 14.1 average places him seventh in the league.
Senior guard
Gilbert Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.) has helped to orchestrate the offense with his play and leadership. Montalvo will enter Saturday's matchup number two in assists per game (4.8) and the number one turnover-to-assist ratio in the league (2.64). There has been no let down on the defensive side of the ball either, as he ranks seventh in the league in steals with a 2.08 steals per game average.
The Knights of Queens will bring to the Pratt Center a fine-tuned offense as well, led by senior forward Akim Neverson. Neverson enters the game number two in points per game (15.4) and number three in both rebounds per game (7.3) and blocks per game (1.1). Neverson has registered two double-double games on the year thus far.
Like the Pioneers, the Knights will also put on the floor a solid leader and distributor. Senior guard Anderson Labase enters the game first in assists per game with a 5.6 average. Junior guard Edil Lacayo will also be watched by the Pioneer defense, as he is averaging 2.5 three pointers made per game this season, number one in the conference ahead of Bonneau's 2.3 average.
The women are set to tip-off at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, with the men to follow at 3:30 at the Pratt Recreation Center on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y.
