Men's Basketball Pulls Away In Second Half To Upend Post, 70-58

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 2, 2011) – The C.W. Post Pioneers rang in the 2011 calendar year with a 70-58 victory over non-conference opponent, Post University, Sunday afternoon in a men's basketball contest at the Pratt Recreation Center. Leading the way for the Pioneers offensively were senior forward
Aaron Hall (Holbrook, N.Y.) and junior guard
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) who each had 19-points.
With the victory the Pioneers move to 5-6 overall on the season, heading into East Coast Conference play for the remainder of the season.
Early in the first half the Pioneers jumped out to an early 13-4 lead on a layup by Hall. The two teams traded baskets on the following possessions, including a highlight reel dunk by Bonneau with just over 14-minutes to go in the half to give the Pioneers their largest lead of the half at nine points (15-6).
After the Pioneers held an eight point lead, the Eagles would trim the lead to one (21-20) on a three-point basket by Josh Lopez at the 8:07 mark.
The teams traded the lead several times including Post taking its largest lead of the game with a 26-23 advantage at the 6:41 mark of the first half. After a 2:42 scoreless drought for both sides, the Pioneers took the lead for good on a Bonneau layup to put the Pioneers up 28-27.
The Pioneers would increase their lead to 32-29 heading into the halftime break on a jumper by freshman
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.), who would go on to finish the game with 11 points.
In the second half, the Eagles tightened up the score on several occasions in the opening minutes but were unable to wrestle the lead from the Pioneers. C.W. Post would take a six-point lead (49-43) on a layup by sophomore
Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) with 11:18 remaining.
From that point, the Pioneers would balloon their lead to 12 on a good three-pointer by Bonneau. C.W. Post got the lead all the way up to 14 three separate times before a last-second jumper by Post to cut the lead to the final score of 70-58.
Gilbert Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.) led the team in assists with seven. Kohler finished the game with a double-double, amassing 15 points and 10 rebounds, including seven defensive boards.
The Pioneers return to action looking to improve their 2-2 ECC conference record as they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas on Jan. 5, before returning home to take on Queens College this upcoming Saturday, Jan. 8.
