Late First Half Run Launches NYIT Past Women's Basketball, 62-49

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2011) – The New York Institute of Technology used a late run in the first half to run away with a 62-49 win over C.W. Post Wednesday evening in an East Coast Conference women's basketball clash at Recreation Hall.
The win against C.W. Post is the first for NYIT since Feb.19, 2005 and ninth overall in program history to improve to 5-10 overall and 3-7 in ECC action. C.W. Post, who owns a 48-9 advantage in the series' match, slips below .500 to 7-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
NYIT's Rebecca Lynch led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting while teammate, Demitra Apergis chipped in 13 points. Cierra Baker grabbed 12 rebounds off the glass.
Junior Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led C.W. Post with 17 points on 8-of-23 shooting from field goal range. Senior Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Bears used a 21-4 spurt in the first quarter, beginning with a jumper from Alexis Tyson at 10:39 that carried through the final second of the half to pull away with a 36-18 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Pioneers chopped the lead down to six (49-43) with 6:55 left to play but could not pull off the comeback as the Bears pulled away with a 10-2 spurt during the final minutes of play.
NYIT completed the game shooting .381 (24 of 63) from field goal range. C.W. Post shot .323 (20 of 62) from the field. Both teams registered 47 rebounds.
C.W. Post is back in action when it hosts Molloy College on Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Pratt Recreation Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
