Women's Basketball Falls Short Against Dowling, 59-44

BROOKVILLE, N.Y.  (Jan. 15, 2011)
– Julia Koppl scored a game-high 15 points, including four triples, to lead Dowling College past C.W. Post, 59-44, in an East Coast Conference women's basketball clash Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.
 
Dowling wins its fourth straight contest and improves to 8-8 overall and 6-3 in conference play. The loss drops C.W. Post to 7-7 overall and 5-4 in the ECC.
 
The Pioneers scored the game's first field goal when junior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) swished a 6-ft jumper at 19:16. The Golden Lions retaliated by knocking down three 3-pointers, including two from Koppl and another from Julia Puwalski to put the Golden Lions ahead, 9-3 with 16:17.
 
The Pioneers caught up and briefly reclaimed the lead when freshman guard Kenyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.) nailed a long three from the left wing at 13:21. 
 
Dowling went ahead with a pair of free throws from Hannah Krueger at 11:35 before the Pioneers pushed out to a 19-16 with back-to-back layups from senior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) and senior forward Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.).
 
The Golden Lions tied the game up on a free throw from Rekik Worku at 5:53. The Pioneers responded with a pair of free throws from Lombardi at 4:32 to bump their lead to 23-21.
 
Dowling continued to fight back and tied the game up at 3:50 with a layup from Nora Bahgat. The Golden Lions stole the lead with the help of a layup from Rekik Worku at 2:22. Dowling finished the half on an 11-2 spurt to lead 32-25. 
 
Dowling maintained its lead in the second half. The Pioneers cut the lead down to five (35-30) when Lombardi scored on a layup at 14:21. But that was as close as the Pioneers would get to Dowling in the game. 
 
The Golden Lions built their lead as high as 17 points (57-40) with 3:37 to play after a free throw from Seja Gamble.
 
 
Dowling finished the game shooting .318 (21 of 66) and outrebounded the Pioneers, 51-43. C.W. Post shot .250 (15 of 60) in the game. 
 
Simmons finished the game with 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds while dishing out seven assists. Puwalski completed the game with 10 rebounds and nine assists.
 
Sophomore guard Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with eight points. Joyner scored seven points and pulled down seven rebounds.
 
C.W. Post is back in action on Wednesday when it travels next door to play at the New York Institute of Technology at 5 p.m.
