Aiken's 19 Leads Women's Basketball Past Mercy, 72-63

BROOKVILLE, N.Y.  (Jan. 13, 2011)
– Senior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) scored a game-high 19 points to lead C.W. Post past Mercy College, 72-63, in an East Coast Conference women's basketball match Thursday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center.
 
The win improves C.W. Post to 7-6 overall and 5-3 in conference action while Mercy slips to 3-10 overall and 1-7 in the ECC.
 
Aiken was flawless from the charity stripe and converted 13 of 13 at the line and pulled down six assists while also recording seven assists, four steals and a block. Junior guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) added 18 points.
 
Mercy jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start the game but the Pioneers quickly caught up an 8-2 burst to cut the lead to 12-10 with 12:49 to play.
 
C.W. Post was relentless and eventually tied the game when junior guard Noelle Pawlicki (Staten Island, N.Y.) drilled a long 3-pointer at 9:28. From there C.W. Post took its first lead of the game when sophomore forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored underneath on a layup at 8:57.
 
Mercy answered with a 3-pointer from Venesha Hunter to reclaim the lead (20-19). But the lead would not stick as Joyner converted a pair of free throws at 8:06 to give the Pioneers the lead for good. 
 
C.W. Post built its largest lead in the game to 15 (68-53) with 2:26 left to play after Aiken converted her final pair of free throws in the game.
 
C.W. Post shot .373 (22 of 59) from field goal range and went 26-for-35 at the line while also outrebounding the Mavericks by a 51-41 count. Mercy shot .328 (22 of 67) in the game.
 
Ashley Borofsky led Mercy in scoring with 16 points and added four rebounds, three assists and four steals. Aysha Williams scored 13 points while Jasmine Williams chipped in 11 while also grabbing nine rebounds.
 
C.W. Post is back in action when it hosts Dowling on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 1:30 p.m.
