Bridgeport Rallies From Early Deficit To Defeat Women's Basketball, 74-71

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 6, 2010)
–  Junior guard Janea Aiken(St. Albans, N.Y.) scored a game-high 22 points but it was not enough as the University of Bridgeport came back from a halftime deficit and held on to defeat C.W. Post, 74-71, in an East Coast Conference women's basketball clash Saturday afternoon at Hubbell Gymnasium.
 
Bridgeport improves to 15-6 overall and 12-3 in conference play while C.W. Post drops to 16-5 overall and 11-4 in the ECC.
 
Bridgeport shot a collective 30 of 57 from field goal range (.526) and went 12-for-16 at the free throw line. C.W. Post converted 25 of 59 baskets from the field (.424) and went 14-for-17 at the line. The Pioneers held a 34-33 advantage on the boards.
 
C.W. Post played an aggressive first half as Aiken paced all scorers with 16 points while converting 7 of 10 from the field, including 2-for-2 behind the arc. The Pioneers led by as many as 10 (45-35) with 1:16 left to play after a layup was scored by Aiken.
 
The Purple Knights responded in the second half, opening on a 10-0 run to take a 47-45 lead after senior forward Shannon Malone (Melbourne, Australia) banked a jumper with 15:12 on the clock. 
 
The Pioneers briefly tied the game up when junior forward Shatima Greer (Central Islip, N.Y.) scored on a putback at 14:57. 
 
Senior forward Emma Beddome (Melbourne, Australia) responded for the Purple Knights with a long three at 14:16 to regain the lead. Bridgeport cushioned its lead to as much as nine points (64-55) with 8:38 on the clock. 
 
The Pioneers threatened to make a run during the final minutes of the game and cut the lead down to three after junior forward Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) scored a layup in the paint with 57 seconds on the clock. The Pioneers regained possession at the 28-second mark after a failed shot attempt from Malone but sophomore forward Noelle Pawlicki's (Staten Island, N.Y.) jumper attempt at 19 seconds missed and Bridgeport rebounded the ball.
 
The Pioneers' next attempt came with 12 seconds on the clock after senior guard Sydney Parsons (Chandler, Ariz.) turned the ball over. The possession was all for naught as senior guard Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) turned the ball over with eight seconds remaining. The Pioneers' final possession came with six seconds on the clock when Moore rebounded a missed jumper. Moore's two-point attempt at the buzzer missed the hoop and Bridgeport held on for the win.
 
Bridgeport boasted five players with double figures in scoring as junior guard Meghan Lewis (Spring, Texas) led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior forward Ana-Marie Kammer (Frankfurt, Germany) added 14 for the Purple Knights. Malone finished the game with 12 points, six assists and three steals.
For the Pioneers, sophomore guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored 17 points while Lombardi finished the game with 12 rebounds.
 
C.W. Post returns to the hardwood to host Mercy College at 5 p.m. in the Pratt Recreation Center gymnasium.
