Solid Defense Propels Women's Basketball Over NYIT, 53-45

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 17, 2010) – Three players boasted double-figure scores to help propel C.W. Post past neighboring New York Institute of Technology, 53-45, in an East Coast Conference men's basketball clash Wednesday evening.
The win improves C.W. Post to 18-6 overall, matching its highest overall win total since the 2006-07 season when the Pioneers were 18-12. The Pioneers are 13-5 in conference play. The loss dips NYIT to 4-20 overall and 4-12 in conference.
Sophomore guard
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led the way for the Pioneers with 13 points while junior guard
Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) scored eight second half points to finish with 11. Aiken also dished out five assists and recorded two thefts. Senior guard
Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) chipped in 10 points with four assists and four steals.
Both teams played a tight set in the first half even as C.W. Post held the lead throughout with the exception of two tie ups.
NYIT tied the game up with back-to-back layups senior guard
Torlanda Poindexter (Rochester, N.Y.) at 10:33 and 10:04. The Pioneers responded with a 10-0 run that began with a three-point field goal from senior guard
Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) at 9:43 and culminated with a trey from Joyner at 7:28.
The Bears came with an 8-0 run that cut the Pioneers' lead to two (24-22) with 6:04 left to play. The offense continued and Poindexter tied the game at 36-all with a layup at the 43-second mark.
NYIT grabbed its only lead of the game when senior forward Alexis Beaumont (Roosevelt, N.Y.) nailed down a jumper at 14:53 to give the Bears a 30-28 lead. Moore tied the game for the fourth time up with a layup at 14:33.
The score remained knotted until senior forward Madison Robertson (Shirley, N.Y.) converted a free throw to shift the balance back in favor of the Bears.
The Pioneers regained the lead (33-31) when freshman guard
Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) swished a three at 11:51.
The Bears continued to fight and tied game when Robertson converted a trey at 7:58. But that was all NYIT would as freshman forward
Nicole Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted a free throw at 6:36 that started a 12-2 run and eventually built the Pioneers' lead as high as 11 (49-38) with 1:12 left to go.
C.W. Post finished the game shooting .267 (16 of 60) from the field and went 14-for-20 at the charity stripe. The Pioneers also held a 40-35 advantage in rebounds. NYIT shot .396 (19 of 48) from field goal range.
Robertson led the Bears with 13 points and pulled down four rebounds with one steal.
C.W. Post returns to the court Saturday, Feb. 20 to host Molloy College for a 1:30 p.m. tip off.
