Women's Basketball Rolls Over Mercy, 80-47

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (February 15, 2010) – Five Pioneers scored in double-digits as the C.W. Post women's basketball team eased past Mercy College, 80-47, on Monday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The Pioneers improve to 17-6 overall and 12-5 in the ECC, while Mercy slips to 4-19, 3-14 in the conference.
The Pioneers started off the game on a 7-0 run including treys by junior guard
Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) and senior guard
Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.). The lead quickly bulged to a 17-7 advantage and at the midway point of the half, following a three pointer from
Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), the Pioneers led 27-10.
The Pioneers continued to push on the offensive and defensive ends, and following a three from Mercy's Ann Butehorn that cut the Pioneer advantage to 31-15, C.W. Post scored eight straight points – six of those from Aiken – pushing to a 24-point lead and eventually heading into the halftime break with a 39-19 advantage.
Mercy opened the second half with a layup by Simone Williams, but the Pioneers went on a quick 11-0 run – five of those points by sophomore guard
Noelle Pawlicki (Staten Island, N.Y.) that pushed their lead to 50-21. For the rest of the game, the Pioneer lead averaged between 29-34 points, topping out at a 35-point lead, 71-36, with 4:35 remaining, as C.W. Post cruised to an 80-47 victory.
The Pioneers were paced offensively by Joyner's 20-point effort, which came off 8-17 shooting including four three-pointers. Adding 12 points and five assists was Aiken, and freshman guard
Ashley Caggiano (Sachem, N.Y.) scored a career-high 11 points as she was 3-3 from the floor, hitting two three points while shooting 3-4 from the charity stripe.
Moore and Pawlicki each chipped in with 10 points, Junior forward
Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, and senior guard
Gina Catherall (Bayside, N.Y.) added a game-high six assists.
Simone Williams scored 16 points to lead Mercy, who also got an 11-point effort from Jasmine Williams.
C.W. Post shot 41% for the game, making 29-70 form the floor, and 11-24 from three-point range. The Pioneers held a 55-29 edge on the glass, and scored 21 points off 20 Mercy turnovers.
The Pioneers will travel to neighboring NYIT on Wednesday, February 17 at 5 p.m., as they begin the final stretch of their regular season.
