Aiken Scores 16 In Women's Basketball's 65-57 Loss To Dowling
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 13, 2010) – Senior Christie Marrone (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a game-high 24 points to lead Dowling College past C.W. Post, 65-57, in East Coast Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The win improves Dowling to 15-7 overall and 9-7 in conference play. C.W. Post slips to 16-6 overall and 11-5 in the ECC.
Dowling completed the game shooting .390 (23 of 59) from the field, including 6-for-15 beyond the arc. C.W. Post finished the game shooting .377 (23 of 61). The Golden Lions held a 40-38 advantage on the glass.
The Pioneers held the lead through most of the first half as senior guard Jasmine Moore (Bronx, N.Y.) scored seven points. Leading 12-10 with 10:45 to play, Moore knocked down a jumper that started up a 10-2 run in favor of the Pioneers.
Dowling answered back as freshman guard Connie Simmons (Syosset, N.Y.) banged in a 3-pointer at the 7-minute mark. Marrone added a jumper and a triple to tie the game at 20 with 4:41 on the clock.
The Golden Lions took the lead with 2:38 remaining when freshman center Nora Bahgat (Cheshire, Conn.) scored on a layup. Dowling went into the halftime with a slim 28-25 lead.
The Pioneers tied things up when Aiken swished a trey at 19:40. Dowling's Kasonna Samms (Massapequa, N.Y.) banked in a jumper at 19:24.
C.W. Post regained the lead when freshman forward Nicole Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted a traditional three-point play with a layup and a free throw to follow, giving the Pioneers a 31-30 lead with 18:37 on the clock.
Marrone scored on a jumper to give the lead back to Dowling (32-31) at 18:04. Marciniak converted another three-point play at 17:04. Dowling's Seja Gamble (Newport News, Va.) tied the game up for the sixth time with a layup at 16:40 before Moore pumped in a three-pointer at 16:19.
Dowling was relentless in its pursuit against C.W. Post. At 15:56, Gamble converted two free throws and the Golden Lions rallied to outscore the Pioneers 16-2 and build an 11-point lead (50-39) with 11:33 remaining.
Dowling led by as many as 14 with 7:25 to play and never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the game.
Simmons and Bahgat each scored nine points for the Golden Lions in the game. Bahgat pulled down nine rebounds while Simmons grabbed eight.
Junior guard
Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with 16 points and seven assists while Moore added 14 points with seven rebounds. Marciniak chipped in 15 points and grabbed six rebounds.
C.W. Post looks to improve things when it hosts its rescheduled game against Mercy College on Monday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m.
