BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2010) – C.W. Post outscored NYIT, 38-30, in the second half to an early deficit and defeat the Bears, 59-57, in an East Coast Conference women's basketball clash Wednesday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center.
C.W. Post improves to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the ECC while NYIT slips to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Senior guard Janea Aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) led the Pioneers in scoring with 17 points and chipped in five assists and four steals in 38 minutes of action on the court. Sophomore guard Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) also registered double scoring figures with 12 points with four rebounds and four steals.
NYIT opened the game on a 10-2 run and kept the Pioneers at a safe distance throughout the half. The Bears built their lead to as many as 14 points (27-13) with 3:56 to play before the Pioneers responded with a short 8-0 spurt to close to gap to 27-21 at the half.
In the second half, the Bears controlled play and continued to make shots to keep the Pioneers out of range. But with 10:34 to play and the Bears leading 46-35, Aiken scored a layup underneath that sparked the Pioneer offense as they went on an 11-1 run and whittled the lead to one (47-46).
NYIT refused to relinquish its lead and still led by six (57-51) with 2:56 to play. But C.W. Post continued to battle with a double and from sophomore forward Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.), a triple from Aiken followed by a free throw by Marciniak with 1:02 left to play that tied the game up at 57-all.
Freshman guard Kenyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.) attempted a three with 28 seconds but could not get the shot to fall in and NYIT rebounded the ball before calling timeout with 14 seconds on the clock.
With nearly one possession left in the game, the Bears had possession of the ball but could not capitalize as Aiken stole the ball away from Alexandra Venuto with nine seconds. Cierra Baker fouled Sears to stop the clock, allowing Sears to convert both free throws to give the Pioneers the lead for good.
NYIT had one last chance to tie the game or win it with seven seconds but Marciniak stole the ball away from Baker before a shot as time expired.
Senior forward Shatima Greer (Central Islip, N.Y.) scored seven points and pulled down six rebounds while senior forward Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.) grabbed eight rebounds.
Baker scored a game-high 24 points and finished with a double-double after grabbing 10 rebounds along with five assists and a steal.
C.W. Post returns to action on Saturday when it faces Molloy College on the road at 1 p.m.
