DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2010) -
The C.W. Post men's basketball team shot a season high 58.1 percent from the floor as the Pioneers picked up a 104-80 victory in the East Coast Conference opener against Mercy College on Wednesday evening.
Five players scored in double figures for the Pioneers, who improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the ECC, while Mercy continues to search for its first win, dropping to 0-4, 0-1 on the season.
Sophomore guard Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) led the way with a 21-point night, shooting 7-11 from the floor. Kohler led a balanced attack that saw junior guard Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) chip in for 19 points, followed by senior guard Gil Montalvo (Astoria, N.Y.) with a 14-point night, sophomore sharpshooter Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) with 12 points, and an 11-point output from junior guard Billy Butler (Elmont, N.Y.).
The Pioneers found themselves behind early, as they trailed by seven points (15-8) less than five minutes into the game. They continued to search for their rhythm offensively, and at 13:59 found themselves down 19-12. However, two free throws from Kohler sparked a 26-4 run that turned a seven point deficit into a 15-point advantage. Montalvo's nine points during the stretch combined with Kohler's eight and six from Butler as the squad hit four treys during the span as well.
The Pioneer lead grew to as many as 23 points in the first half (59-36 with 1:22 to play), and they showed no signs of letting up following the halftime break. Following a steal and a layup by Ed Wilson, Mercy was able to cut the lead to only 15 points, but C.W. Post wasted little time in pushing right back into the 20-point advantage range, and led by 24 points midway through the second half with a 82-58 advantage with 11:06 remaining.
The visitor lead topped out at 30 points as C.W. Post hit the century mark on a Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) jumper that gave the Pioneers a 100-70 lead with 4:20 left in the game, and the C.W. Post coasted the rest of the way as they came away with the 24-point victory.
C.W. Post displayed solid shooting all around, as the Pioneers canned 38.1% from beyond the arc (8-for-21) and made 24 of 31 attempts from the charity stripe. Mercy shot 38.9 from the floor and made 25 of 90 shots, but the Mavericks struggled from long range, hitting only 2 of 16 attempts from downtown. The Mavericks held a slight edge in rebounding, 48-44, and the Pioneers scored 24 points off 26 Mercy turnovers as well.
C.W. Post continues ECC play as it travels to Dowling on Saturday, December 4 for a 4 p.m. matchup against the Golden Lions.
